Not So Far-Fetched Sci-Fi

Posted By Jim Moscheck

Lucifer's Hammer by Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven.

Read it years ago and while there are other asteriod/comet hitting the Earth novels, most notably Hammer of the Gods by Arthur C. Clarke and at least two really bad movies, LH read like it could happen tomorrow. It mostly dealt with the aftermath of the impact and how the survivors carried on.

Now that I think about it, Hammer of the Gods was pretty plausible, too, but takes place at least 100 years into the future.

Hottest SF characters/actors?

OK, Here's another but it's really a comedy. And yeah, I really like the movie.

Teri Garr in Young Frankenstein.

Jim:

What is your problem with environmentalists? Like them, I'm worried about the state of the world's environment for my children and my grandchildren's future.

Sorry that market conditions have made their message finally hit home to you and the rest of us.

I remember reading in school about Teddy Roosevelt who was a conservative when the word "conserve" was still in the Republican vocabulary.

With the current thinking of many conservatives we will constantly be fighting wars for the last remaining drops of oil, instead of coming up with viable alternatives like solar, wind, fuel cells, etc. And don't tell me we fought this war in Irac to liberate the Iraci people from a rotten dictator.

If you are religious, God put us here to be stewards of the Earth, not plunderers.

Midwest locations?

Posted By Jim Moscheck

Hi Dennis,

The site of the Michigan Star Gaze is a nice site to observe from. It is a private campground near Gladwin, about 4 hours from Chicago. The sites are mostly for RVs, but there are also nice areas for tents. The big plus is the observing hill behind and above the campground. You can pitch a tent up there and observe for $5 bucks a person per night, or you can stay in the campground and just observe on the hill.

Another site I observe from is Lake Hudson Recreation Area which is near the Ohio border south of Jackson. The campground is primitive with pit toilets, but it's fairly dark. It is designated a Dark Sky Preserve and it is astronomer friendly with only three lights in the whole park. The campground has some good sites to observe from, but most folks observe from the beach or picnic area.

At both sites on new moon weekends there will be others there, too.

Ok, Maybe it tastes like crow. :S

Wow, 35 seconds away from the Stanley Cup, but the Pens live for another day.

I'd like to say the Wings outplayed them, but except for shots on goal they didn't.

If the Pens win on Wednesday at home it'll be a nerve racking, nail biting, anything goes game 7 back here in Detroit.

The Republican "Gold Standard"

Posted By Jim Moscheck

What's a little embezzlement, as long as they keep them gays from marryin', show us their family values, question everyones patriotism, and "support" them troops. :S

Really, I'm not surprised. What I find odd is that when the GOP is called out on something like this there is little reporting of the fact or if there is it's late on a Friday afternoon so it gets buried on page 10. If I hadn't seen it here I might have missed it.

While viewing M29 at 112x something flew through the FOV. It had that look of a fast moving satellite, or maybe a small meteor. I studied StarryNight Pro at this time and place for a possible identity, no luck. Any other suggestions for making such identifications?

Or maybe someone here saw it too? What are the chances?

We finally had three good hours for viewing here in Detroit.

Keith

Hi Keith,

Stargazing in Michigan can be frustrating for sure.

It was probably a satellite, I see them often at low powers and once in a while at higher power. I've also seen a meteor or two in the EP.

Cheers,

You might just want to add encoders and digital setting circles. Should be a lot less expensive and will accomplish the same thing.

Equipment hounds take note

Posted By Jim Moscheck

I played guitar in rock bands up until a few years ago. Buying equipment was always hard to justify, especially when you are broke with two kids, a wife, and a house payment. Well, after a Long wait I finally had enough to get the rig I always dreamed of and the last band I was in broke up soon after that. It now sits in the basement and I might go down and play once a month. But, I'm happy I have it now and have no regrets except I wish I would have had it years ago when I was younger.

Same goes for my astro equipment, I have what I want and use it when I can with no regrets. I really have no desire for anything new and I'm NOT going down the imaging route as that would make me broke again.

Great topic,
