Jupiter and the Sun 11/11/04

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

Got one last image of AR 696 this morning and earlier I took the C925 out to test it after getting it back from Celestron. I shot Saturn and Jupiter. Saturn didn't turn out well mostly because it was directly overhead and Alt-Az scopes don't track well there. I turned to Jupiter and gave it a shot. The planet was only 20-30 degrees above the horizon so I didn't expect much. However, considering everything, the image turned out pretty well. You can even see the GRS!! I think the scope looks much better now than before and have my fingers crossed for a pleasant planetary season!!

New Camera

Posted By Paul Maxson

I went out and did it this weekend. I bought a digital camera. It is a Sony Cybershot DSC-W1. It's a 5.1 megapixel "snapshot" camera. I bought it because I'm getting a dog (SunShine) this weekend and wanted something to shoot her with.

Anyway, I'm wondering how I can use this astronomically. Can I put it up to the eyepiece of the telescope and focus, or should I remove the eyepiece on the scope first? If any of that works, I wonder if there are adapters that couple the camera to the scope.

Not a BIG deal, but I thought why not try it astonomically... grin

Jupiter and the Sun 11/20/04

Here are four images of the sun and one of Jupiter. None of the sunspot groups are very impressive, but at least there was something to shoot. The Jupiter image looks decent considering the low elevation, dewing and dawn approaching. I think the C925 is working much better after it's trip to Celestron.

Here is the only significant sunspot group that was on the Sun on Nov 23. Today, there are two nice spots coming around. I have images, but haven't processed them yet.

Sunspots on November 24, 2004

Hi all,

Here are images of the sunspot groups AR704 and AR706-707 from today (Nov 24). We had fog this morning and it really had just burned off. Even though I'm getting some sunshine I do miss images from my European friends....but take heart, it WILL get better (and at least there are no monster spots to miss).

Sunspots 11/26 and 11/27

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all!

Seems like it's been forever since I've posted anything. Actually I have been quite busy with the telescopes, but also busy elsewhere. Funny thing is that it is easier to image objects than to reduce the raw image to final products. I got images of the sun on November 26 and 27. I also have images from November 25, but the time data is at home. I'll post that image later today or tomorrow.

Oh yeah....if you want a little entertainment, click on my "Little Ray of SunShine" link. smile
