Matt Gaetz says he's under federal investigation for sexual misconduct

In Greg's case, and in mine, it is undoubtedly a true response, not a "classic" response.  Your use of the word "classic" suggests insincerity, to me anyway.  I don't know any Q-anon people and I know a ton of Republicans.  (I don't know anyone who is refusing to be vaccinated either, and, other than on this forum, I don't know anyone who actually thinks the election was stolen from Trump.)  I really do not think that I am that atypical for a Republican.

I understand that it is irresistible for you, the Ds in Washington and the press to paint all Republicans as Capital storming, Trump loving, gun-toting, mask-eschewing  conspiracy-theory lunatics.  It is always easier to knock down a straw man than it is to try to understand those who disagree with you on important issues.   We'll see in the mid-terms and in 2024 whether the Q-anon contingent is powerful, or not.  I'm happy to see the national D party put their eggs in that basket.

Hi Jim:

Of course the above is true - the mere existence of Q-anon type crazies is not my point at all.  My point is skepticism concerning the number of Q-anon type Rs and skepticism about their actual level of influence.

The press has an interest in inflating the number and power of the R crazies.  I have seen that time and again.  You seem to buy into this line of propaganda, although I doubt the Q-anon crazy description applies to a significant number of the Republicans you know personally or see in your shop every day.  We'll see just how influential these fringe folks are in '22 and '24.

It is interesting and indisputable that you and Jim M. have read a lot more about the Q-anon crazies than me or Greg.  My guess is that you find it appealing to read about the crazy element on "the other side."  Of course this reinforces your world view in a polarized world.

The complement is true.  I have no interest in reading about the crazies in my party - they are a phenomenon that I wish would go away.  I suspect they will go away, more or less, without the mother's milk of DJT to sustain them.  I do read the occasional article about leftist agitators whose main goal in life is to dismantle our police forces.  Or the actual pedophiles like WJC in Jeff Epstein's circle.  Those guys are all D's you know, although I'm sure they have nothing in common with you two.

How does the GA law restrict anyone's ability to vote?  Is it the ID aspect?  As you know, CO is a 100% mail-in/drop box voting state.  I heard that we might get the All-Star game.  We require IDs to register to vote.  Calling a voter ID law "Jim Crow" is insulting to the memories of the activists who fought and died to eliminate systemic voter discrimination laws in the South.  Why are you OK with that Rod?

Requiring each person to prove their own identity before sending in their own mail-in ballot is contradictory to the purpose of mail-in balloting. If I or anyone signs their own ballot and mails it in then that is not only a convenient and expeditious way to encourage voting without having to stand in line, it also allows people who could otherwise not vote due to work or other issues to vote. Requiring voters to first having to prove their identity to the satisfaction of the Republicans in Georgia defeats the purpose of mail-in balloting in the first place. The latter is known as "voter suppression" by those who oppose the requirement because that is the practical effect of the practice. I'm staying on-topic with my response and I will not be distracted with dubious comparos to New York or other states at this time.
Rod - In Colorado, the mother of mail in voting, we must have ID to register.  We have to sign the actual ballot on the outside of the return sleeve, and apparently they spot check for signature accuracy against the registration records.  The machines automatically reject any unsigned ballot sleeves, although I suppose the machine would not reject a fraudulently signed ballot.  The spot checkers would need to do that.

In any case, we require a valid ID of some sort to register.  It is pretty easy since 99.9% of folks register when they get or renew their driver's license.  Is that racist?  I personally found Greg's comparison to NY to be quite persuasive.  This whole kerfuffle has nothing to do with voting rights or voting access and everything to do with bare-knuckle politics.  Shame on MLB for caving in to the speciously woke.

Nor can they take time off of work to vote in hours that have now been reduced. The Republican leadership in the state of Georgia and in other states that are attempting to do the same thing know this and are falsely basing the need to do so on imaginary claims of voter fraud. Hence the pushback from MLB, and various companies like Target, Delta, Coca cola and others...
Biden got four Pinocchio's for claiming that the GA law reduces voting hours.  https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/03/30/biden-falsely-claims-new-georgia-law-ends-voting-hours-early/  You're just parroting a D lie.

Drop boxes were first introduced into GA the pandemic election.  Can you really argue that trying to bring some organization to the 2020 pandemic election is discriminatory?

Last, how much documentation do you need - a drivers license or a free voter ID card would suffice  https://sos.ga.gov/admin/files/GAID_Req_Brochure.pdf  That only discriminates against the terminally lazy, or maybe those whose ballots are harvested.  Any legit voter has an ID or can easily get one.  Like I said before, CO requires an ID to register to vote and you have to sign the ballot sleeve.  Are we discriminatory too?  Our state has had these rules for many years.

Last, "...are falsely basing the need to do so on imaginary claims of voter fraud."  I agree that voter fraud is not rampant, it is actually pretty rare.  Extremely rare.  It is not non-existent though.

By analogy, gun crime is extremely rare too, compared to the number of gun owners in the US.  Are you OK with selling guns with no background check or ID because literally 99.99987% of the guns owned in the US are used safely and legally each year? *

*393M guns in US vs. 39773 gun crimes/year including suicides.  Sources available.

Let me cut to the chase - got a busy afternoon.  On the merits, I think a voter ID law make sense.  That said, I don't think voter fraud is rampant.

Now the point; I am 100% confident that R's universally  favor these laws and D's universally oppose ID laws because of pure hyper-inflated bare-knuckle politics.  This is a classic wedge issue and that is why the R's laughably bitch and moan so much about election integrity and why the D's laughably play the Jim Crow card.

Bottom line - find me a handful of elderly minority shut-ins who lose the vote because of an ID law, and I'll find you a handful of illegals who vote or illegal votes facilitated by a "no ID required law."  Not sure which group is bigger, but they are both tiny compared to the size of the electorate.

Hi Jim:

You must run with a strange crowd.  I know plenty of people who voted for Trump, most because he was the best alternative in view of their political persuasion, but I sure don't know many people who idolize him.
