Vaccinations among men rising!

Of course it is here permanently, with or without vaccine hesitancy.  So is the Spanish Flu (H1N1).  H1N1 does not kill millions a year any longer.  As you know, RNA respiratory viruses can not be eradicated because they mutate so quickly.

The goal is to get the vaccinations out, add in an annual booster, maybe with the flu shot (don't know if they can be mixed) and get on with normal life.  We are almost there in the US.

Some number of people will die of Covid 19 each year, just like they do from the various influenzas.  I suspect that the Covid cases contracted in the next couple of years will continue to be more lethal than the flu in the key demographics.  Evolution, herd immunity and vaccines will push the numbers down though.

Don't get me wrong, it sucks to be the decedent or the family of one killed by any one of these respiratory viruses, but we can and will manage.

Hi James:

You and I mentioned India many months ago.  I have no idea why the huge surge there has been so delayed.  Maybe the test kits are just now getting wide use?

Yes, probably far more than we know about.  It is terrible!

My point is relatively minor why is India getting hammered now?  Why not last spring or this fall?  My guess is that they were dropping in the streets last year too, but without test kits who would know for sure?

Roughly speaking, Bangalore is eight times denser than Dallas. From what they tell me, they are building funeral pyres in every available space, and the smoke and stench are overwhelming. Almost every family is affected in one way or another, and only the truly rich and privileged can access health care under current conditions. India's health care system has never been accessible to the Dalits (the untouchables) and others in the under-class. Obviously, the current situation has made that problem only worse.

It seems that everyone has a story, and my own boss, who has lots of family in the region, has seen many relatives close and distant pass away. One tragedy that has played out is that the villagers from the surrounding rural areas bring wood into the city to sell for funeral pyres. They then return and infect their village, which has little to no access to health care, and 15-20% of the village is dying. This is what happened to my boss's home village according to him. He lost the Uncle, for example, who recognized that he was talented enough to be in school as a child and paid for and sent him to school in the city. This generosity on the part of his Uncle lead to his eventual rise out of poverty and making the US his home. So, lots of personal tragedies are playing out.

There are of course a variety of reasons why India is now having this terrible surge. But one that concerns me the most is that they have lots of human wood to burn through and create more variants that will undoubtedly spread worldwide. There is not a single significant variant of concern yet, UK, South African, Brazil, etc., that has not escaped its borders. It's foolish IMHO to assume that whatever variant that is driving India's tragedy, or other variants that could arise from it will not eventually make their way to the US. Are we prepared for it? Somewhat I suppose, but we would be better prepared if more people would get vaccinated.
Hi James:

Yours is a grim but very compelling post.  Thank for relaying this information. Jim

Hi Rod:

Interesting how this story has evolved.  Last summer the press slandered anyone who even mentioned that the virus might have escaped from a Chinese lab as a tin-foil-hat grade right-wing whack-job.  I'm sure that you saw that Politifact has recently retracted last years "pants on fire" awarded to a righty who was favoring the lab escape theory.

Now the press seems to consider the lab leak theory to be plausible, if not proven.  Where was their curiosity and skepticism last year?

No doubt the occupant of the oval office influenced press behavior.  It is a travesty that they put their all-consuming mission of painting Trump and his people as buffoons before their actual jobs of investigating and reporting the news.  I am not sure if the press can recover their credibility any time soon.

Meanwhile, did you get up early today?  I am a bit too far East for a proper view - the moon dipped into some low clouds on the horizon just before totality.  Still, it was pretty.

Hi Greg:

Matt Taibbi has a good article on the fact checking phenomenon.  You might know that he is a lefty, who I think still writes for Rolling Stone.  He is constantly in trouble with the left though, because he refused to fall for Russia-gate and he often takes a common sense approach to the stories that the left reports hysterically.

His point here is that fact-checkers are great when they stick to their original purpose - fact checking news articles for errors before publication.  Things went off the rails when the press weaponized fact checkers into arbiters of political "fact" which really means listing opinions they disagrees with as "false," and listing agreeable opinions as "fact."  Taibbi explores in some depth the "indisputable fact" (as of last year) that the novel coronavirus had natural origins.  As you mention, this is just one of legions of "indisputable facts" where political bias has caused the fact checking industry to face plant.

Hi Rod:

Compare your statement above to the literal oceans of Russian collusion writing spewed by the press for the first two years of Trump's presidency - compare your statement above to the hysterical tone of that reporting, compare it to the results, up to and including impeachment.

Wow, I have to shake my head and maybe roll my eyes.  If this nit of a fact about Manafort is what you are going to hang your hat on to deny the totality of the Russian collusion hoax... then I'm not sure what to say.

Note that Manafort's associate did the same for the Russian intel officer who has subsequently been sanctioned by the US government for the solarwinds hack and the Kremlin's plan to influence US elections:

And that's what you're calling a "nit"...
Yes, I'm calling it a nit. There is no connection to Trump - see the last line of the article.  See the Mueller report.

Look, I'm no fan of Trump's, but I never thought he was a Russian stooge, and I never thought he would die in jail as so many in the press promised us.

The Manafort link to Russian intelligence is small potatoes compared to the outrageous magnitude of the whole "Russian Collusion" fabrication.  If Manafort illegally passed campaign intelligence to Russia then I hope some day he is further prosecuted.  He can rot in jail for all I care.  You seem to think the entirety of the Russian Collusion Hoax was about Paul Manafort.  It was not, the hoax was about Trump.  Was Manafort even mentioned in the bogus Steele dossier?  Please keep you eye on the ball!

That aside for the moment, do you think Trump will be criminally indicted by the upcoming grand jury investigation into him and his organization?
Hi Rod:

Given Trump's personality and basic idiocy, I would not be surprised if his subordinates were doing all sorts of things behind his back.  No one has ever accused Trump of being an insightful, detail oriented, micro-manager.

I have not read much about the investigation, so I won't be surprised one way or another.  A grand jury proceeding is secret and a good prosecutor can get whatever result he wants by carefully selecting the evidence he presents to the grand jury.

Politically, I would be a bit surprised by a Trump indictment because that would keep him in the press, rally the faithful, and enhance his chances in 2024 if he survives.  Does the prosecutor really want to take that risk?  In other words, if they take a shot at Trump, they better have the goods to put him in jail or he will come out stronger than before.

I've read some of the emails and watched some of the commentaries and read several articles and fact-checks and what happened as far as I'm concerned is that Fauci changed his mind over time as facts on the ground changed. That's it. It's no more mysterious or nefarious than that.
I've been on vacation for a bit and then helped move a kid - hard work in the red-hot South Dakota and Colorado sun.  So I missed this Fauci affair.  Entirely.  Lucky me!  I'm only writing now so that no thinks I've given up on the forum!  Carry on.
