Did you try something like the Meade Tele-extender (I think that is the one w/o any lenses)? If not, contact someone like Joe C from Mercury Support Systems or Ken D from Ken's Rings and Things. They may be willing to do custom work, and both do a great job from the products I've seen.

Check out Rob Teeter's stuff (astromart sponser!). He makes longer focal length dobs and they are really really nice looking. He has some great woodwork and some novel ideas. I had a few chances to use a 10" Planetkiller of his design and it was fantastic.

How to shorten a Refractor tube?

I've been wondering the EXACT same thing for the same combination! A buddy told me to put tape around the outside of the tube and very carefully cut the tube with a fine hacksaw... I'm not so sure about it.

I had the new and old style. Either was great IMO. I stuck with the older style because of the reason Hal did, the lens is closer to the top. Although it doesn't have an eyecup, so it takes some getting used too.
