Turns out the O-ring is very thick, replacing with a thinner felt ring allows standard size finders to fit no problem.

I had one, great scope. So good I was suprised the 110 was replacing it.

There was speculation the split was because a shorter, bino- tube section was going to be offered. Personally I think it has to do with anodizing limits on length, the bino theory could have been taken care of as shipped, but wasn't.

The foam rings are the baffles. Actually the edges are the baffles, the bulk allows them to be slid around unlike regular baffles. Good thing, too. The set in one half of my tube was going the wrong way, vignetting the aperture, easily removed, replaced and pushed to the right position. Do not point at the sun!

Stanton Friedman was on George Noory Coast to Coast radio the other night talking about the 60th aniversary of Roswell and his new book. He referred to those "noisy negativists" or some-such as people who have made up their minds and won't believe regardless of the evidence.

Well I am a skeptic, but only because I see no convincing evidence. Trust me, I really would like to see some convincing evidence. But we should be suspicious of feelings-based belief rather than the facts. True believers like Friedman don't seem to understand there are a lot of us who would like nothing more than to find scientific proof we have been visited, but that until that day, we remain skeptics.

Cleaning a Fluorite Doublet

I removed and cleaned the fluorite element uncoated of a doublet, and had no problems using the usual common sense, plus:

Resist the temptation to "huff" the lens with your breath, or water, which can attack fluorite. Use technical grade acetone or isopropyl alchool and kleenex. Use thin plastic gloves.

I have one that is actually quite good optically. The body is nicer than the ETXs, no plastic. However the paint sleeks easily.

Low-ball offers

Okay, here is a true story: a low-ball offer from a SELLER.

I put an ad on AM looking for a Takahashi CN-212. An AM'r of a couple years but no feedback asked me if I wanted to buy his, said it had some issues, but wouldn't take any money until I looked at it first. The price was $1000 plus shipping--if I thought that high, he would cover the shipping.

How could I loose?

I told him the scope may well be worth twice that (and was indeed insured) even with cosmetic issues, a 2mm chip on the primary. After I looked at it I decided it was a steal. The tube blemishes were primarily the felt imprinting in the paint from being over clamped, I can't even see the chip, a few scuffs inside from the secondary sliding down the tube. Optics needed cleaning, but perfect.

He was happy, I was happy. I am sure that this was a one time event.
