webcam for telrad?

Posted By Charles Hakes

Does anyone use a webcam or VERY low magnification camera to rough align your scope? This would be for remote operations. When I turn the scope on and move from "home" it is really hard to get a sync star perfectly lined up, so was thinking of adding a web cam to look through the telrad. Or something like that. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Charlie

Files have been piling up. I started this one mid-April and just got around to processing yesterday. Remote operations are progressing, but at a snails pace. As always, processing suggestions welcome.

NGC 6045 etc.

Another one from last month. I might get to add to this, since I ended up discarding about half the luminance frames during processing for one reason or another.

Haven't posted in a long time. We got internet access and have spent a while getting things to be able to operate remotely. This is one of the first done totally while sitting at home via Logmein.

I am always curious as to what the colors look like on your monitors. Every time I look at what I have processed on a different monitor, I want to go back and re-process. (There is getting to be quite a queue for re-processing.)

I took this horizontally, but while processing kept having to twist my neck to get the galaxy upright... Anyone else have those sort of problems.

Clear skies,
Charlie

Didn't that web site have the planets that were "tied" to you cursor last year? That was cool - what happened to them?

Freaking out on collimation

I have center-spotted my secondary, but I'm not sure it helps that much. I find I sometimes need to do a course centering of the secondary without the cheshire - just stand back a ways to look at it.

Re: Recipe for producing a 102mm semi-apo

Apogee has new lenses like that (102mm F15) for $250. I use an old Edmund scope that works great. Haven't looked at who sells them now. You are right - it is very long and unwieldy. But the images are great.

8" f/5 Ideas

Posted By Charles Hakes

When you say 8" "travel scope" I think you mean truss-style that will collapse into a tiny box. I did see a web site a couple years back about someone who made an 8" f5 for a trip to Australia. It fit into a carry-on size for an airplane. I'll see if I can find it again and post a link.

Good Binoculars

I really like my Orion Ultraview 10x50. Well worth the money. I got them as a second so it was an even better buy. I like the long eye relief so I can use them in the daytime with my sunglasses on. Nice wide views and sharp stars. I would rather have be them waterproof and maybe have a flatter field, but that would be way over $200.
