They don't reason, they believe as so many on the left do, that if one has a "title" that sounds impressive, then they must automatically have some sort of expertise on the subject.

I like you, read the "scientific" article which amounted to a bunch of HS.  The very first supportive document (#1 in the footnotes) used to backup their pseudoscientific assertions began with the incredibly impressive evidence that 90% of all PhDs were awarded to "white people" as the "scientific" article claimed, which of course could only mean that the GeoSciences are Implicitly racist.  Nothing else of evidence was provided to back up the assertion.  It was pretty much just that and only that.

Here was the 2nd paragraph (of the footnoted article):  "The geosciences are among the least diverse science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields in the United States, with almost 90% of doctoral degrees awarded to White people1. And racial diversity in PhD-level Earth scientists has not improved over the past four decades, with faculty of colour holding only 3.8% of tenured or tenure track positions in the top 100 geoscience departments2. The less diverse a field, the less welcoming it is to minorities, and the more prevalent implicit biases become. Combined with structural and social factors, the relative homogeneity in geoscience reinforces the dominant culture. As a result, women3, people from sexual and gender minorities4, and Black and Hispanic people5 all leave the field at higher rates than the average student or practitioner".

Oh, so since 90% of the PhDs are awarded to "white people'.... well then, that certainly is cocksure evidence that the GeoSciences are 'racist'.

Yes, yes, of course that's it.  The field isn't diverse, and therefore it must then be "unwelcoming" to minorities, which of course leads to the Logical conclusion (NOT) that there are "implicit biases" in said science.

Yeah, that's some real "scholarship" there isn't it!   LOL  tongue

BTW Greg, you may have noticed that the 2nd link that JB put forth was the academic credentials of the author the article.

Is that supposed to impress us?  She's got a piece of paper behind her name that indicates that some other academicians awarded her a PhD, therefore her logic is beyond reproach??

Sorry, that garners zero weight in my book, especially since her PhD is in Geology.  So then that makes her an expert in the psychological aspects of the subject of racism in Geo Sciences?  Not hardly.
OMG! - Welcome back Richard.  I hope you have been well.  Jim

Hi Rich:

The above conclusion is simply wrong.  I read the article and I read the Free Beacon piece, which I strongly believe mischaracterized the article.  The Beacon made the article sound like wild-eyed fringe lunacy.  The article itself was a fairly sober perspective presented by a black immigrant based upon her experiences in the geosciences in the US.  It was hardly radical stuff, and I don't agree with some of her conclusions.  Even so, I appreciate her point of view.  She is the black immigrant working in the geosciences, not me.

The Beacon's characterization of the article was outrageously silly in any case, whether or not one agrees with the author on the merits.

In this incarnation of your Astromart existence, please try to address my actual position, rather than arguing against straw men of your own fantasy.  I know this is almost certainly a hopeless wish on my part, but never say never.

I would simply ask, where did the Free Beacon totally distort her article and her message?

I actually had to reread JB's response to you and wonder to myself "was JB making a joke to you"?
The Beacon took one quote about the rock hammer out of context and built a false narrative that the article is about, "A group of scientists say black Americans are scared to use hammers needed for geology because of fear they will be killed by police."  The article was actually about a black immigrant's experiences with subtle racism and bias in an industry she knows well.  I think we ought to try to understand her position (not mock it as the Beacon does) even if we do not agree.  Hers is a valid and informative point of view.

Hi Greg:

Your perspective is presented much more fairly than the Beacon's.   I too doubt that overt racism drives the overwhelming whiteness of geology.  I totally accept that geosciences is a non-diverse field though.  The subtle historical and regional underpinnings of this easily demonstrated relative minority underrepresentation  are worth discussing, and the author's perspective is particularly relevant.  A lot more relevant than my perspective for instance.

As you note, the Beacon exists to push an agenda.  No worries there - in my opinion they over did it in this case, by a lot.  Jim

Hi Greg:

I don't believe that you or Rich have disputed that blacks and women are underrepresented in the geosciences, relative to population numbers of course, but also relative to black and woman representation in other science and engineering disciplines.  If you dispute this basic premise, please let me know.

If not, Then I am sure that we could come up with some reasons, maybe compelling innocuous reasons, why this disparity may exist.  Reasons other than subtle historical bias against blacks and women.  Personally, I think that subtle historical bias against blacks and women is a real and important part of the answer to the question of, "why are blacks and women are underrepresented in the geosciences?"  Maybe not the only reason, but an important one.

Along comes a black woman working in this field.  Her perspective is valuable even if her examples are not overly compelling (as James pointed out pretty well).  Rather than try to appreciate her perspective and broader meaning, and rather than considering her actual point, Rich and the Beacon (and to a lesser extent you) go straight to mocking her, as if subtle bias in the geosciences is not and never was a thing.  As if the possibility of racial or gender bias in this field is so far beyond rational discussion as to be properly subject to ridicule.

Agree with her or not, she has experiences that are valid to this discussion.  Jim

Really?  The right manufactures issues?  That's pretty funny considering that the left is outraged at everything in life and manufactures psuedo issues everywhere they go in order to politicize said issues.

That is the story of the left, everything is a problem for them.
No one, not even you Rich, can possibly fail to see that the Free Beacon manufactures issues for the right to be outraged about.

All of these can be true simultaneously, and even if the left does sometimes manufacture outrage, it in no way detracts from the point that the Beacon definitely was in this case.
Exactly!  Thank you  James.  I also agree with Greg that overt racism is less prevalent now than in the past.  I agree with Thomas Sowell that the emphasis a parent puts on homework correlates with success in the STEM fields.  I think that Greg is probably correct that part of the underrepresentation of women and minorities in the geosciences is explained by the geosciences lacking appeal to urban students, although this begs the larger question of why so many blacks are living in relative poverty, or in the large urban centers.   (I'm sure that Rich would argue that historical bias and subtle racism has nothing to do with it.)  I agree with Greg that race and CRT is being over-played by the left and the media.  There are a lot of red herrings floated in this thread that I agree with - these are still red herrings.

Back on topic, most people now believe that diversity of race, gender, and perspective enriches a work force.  I would guess that most professors in geosciences are interested in attracting more diverse candidates to this field.  I have some reason to know this is true because my son graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a degree in Geological Engineering and we talk.

In my opinion, anyone who categorically dismisses the perspective and opinion of a black woman who is a professor in this field is missing an opportunity to broaden their own perspective.  I may not agree with her on each point, but she gave us honest insight into how she feels about this subject and that is valuable.  Jim

Rich owned, once again.  Keep shouting louder dude, apparently James got bored and you can now declare yet another specious rhetorical victory.

Meanwhile, how did you swallow your pride sufficiently to beg Herb for reinstatement?  If I were ever tossed in disgrace from this web site, like you were, my ego would not permit me to grovel for reinstatement.  I guess the product of your integrity and your self-esteem is zero.

Bored with your schtick already, Jim
