For instance, Ron DeSantis' Florida had its highest number of covid cases (21000+) on Friday, higher than when the pandemic began. AND WHY? It's because the majority of those not getting vaccinated and opposed to wearing masks are Republicans! There's no mystery about it. You don't have to agree with Greg that it's not going away, it's obvious...
Hi Rod:

Ok, maybe obvious that Covid is not going away.  I was agreeing with Greg primarily on our philosophical options as a society.  I do not think there is the need or the civic will to go back to full-scale masking and even less for lock downs.  A frightening new vaccine-resistant variant might change my opinion of course.

Curious what the situation in CA is like?  Are most people still wearing masks?  Are the restaurants and bars open?  They are here in CO, and I hope that they stay that way.  Our infection rate is manageable and the death rate is way down, just a couple of deaths/day.  https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/usa/colorado/

You and the author of the Hill article are way over-politicizing the situation in Florida.  It is not like all the Ds got vaccinated and none of the Rs did.  I love the line in the article about Rs "politicizing this event."  Although true that Rs have been way too political, it takes Davis-grade political blinders to be oblivious to the corresponding D political propaganda.  See your original article or your post for examples.  As Ralph Nader said once upon a time, "there is not a dime's worth of difference between the parties."  On the issue of political Covid propaganda, I agree 100%.

Also, something is going on in Florida other than politics.  Their vaccination rates are less than CA and CO for example, but not terribly so.  See below.  Going indoors during the heat of the summer is a big part of it I'd guess.  Hawaii is spiking hard, and they have one of the best vaccination rates out there.  Again, deaths are not nearly so high in HI.  I agree with Greg that we need to tolerate some death from Covid.  As long as the emergency rooms are not overwhelmed on a state-wide scale, I am happy to go maskless into public, now that I am fully vaccinated.

More private businesses that are returning workers to the office are implementing mask mandates for office workers. So far, there is no appetite for public shutdowns or mask mandates in North Texas, but the Austin area did issue a public mask mandate. Texas schools will open soon with no mask mandates since our Governor issued an executive order banning mask mandates for schools. We have not begun to plateau yet, and I'm sure that we will see an even higher rise when schools reopen.
Hi James:

Is the bolded part a guess or is there data showing this figure for Texas?  99% seems high...?  I'm not trying to go all "Davis" on you!  I fully support vaccination and am dismayed by those persons (whether R or not) who choose not to get vaccinated.  I would think that politicians of all stripes would seize on this more dramatic sort of data to push in a very matter-of-fact apolitical manner for vaccinations.  Maybe some are, but I see more of the ineffective and internally inconsistent, self congratulatory, polarizing, political shaming type of articles, like the one Rod posted to start this thread.

Here is one article that supports your data - maybe not 99% but 95% or over.  In view of data like this, I just can't imagine how titanium clad someone's bubble has to be to choose not to get vaccinated.  https://abcnews.go.com/US/vast-majority-icu-patients-covid-19-unvaccinated-abc/story?id=79128401

I would hope that the Resident RINO here can swoop in on his cape and answer that simple question above.

That would be great!   smile
Why do you think I favor masking school aged kids?  Tilt at windmills much?

From the article:

The data is clear: According to the CDC, as of July 19, a grand total of 4,072 vaccinated Americans had been hospitalized with symptomatic breakthrough infections, out of more than 161 million who have been fully vaccinated. That is a breakthrough hospitalization rate of less than 0.003 percent. Better still, of those hospitalized, only 849 have died of covid-19. That means the death rate from those breakthrough infections is 0.0005 percent.

Your odds are greater of dying in a lightning strike than Dying of Covid, IF you are vaccinated.
Cool, since you posted this, I assume that (a) you are vaccinated, and (b) you support civic campaigns to encourage those who might have read or heard misinformation to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

If my assumptions are wrong, please feel free to correct me.

But it's obvious that the ones who won't wear them and or take them off in the store are white and are either primarily older or younger adults with a couple of kids who unlikely to be vaccinated. In the cases I've seen, one older white guy took the mask off as soon as he entered the store and threw it into his shopping cart.  In three other cases, it was younger adults family shopping with kids with one of the families looking like they were genetic throwbacks from a "WrongTurn" movie.  Otherwise, people are generally abiding by the mandate.
Now, given the propensity of people to travel to Florida or Hawaii, it's not a mystery why covid cases are going up, despite higher vaccination rates in the case of Hawaii.
Additionally, death rates appear lower for two reasons: 1. Patients in hospitals now are getting better treatment than they were in the onset and surge phases of the initial covid pandemic. 2. Deaths from covid typically lag reporting of cases by anywhere from two to six weeks, depending on location. The Delta variant is more serious and warrants more vaccinations, including the likelihood of boosters and the wearing of masks to prevent infection. Those who believe otherwise or whose behaviors are contrary to a mandate are putting everyone at risk because of spread and the increasing potential for a vaccine resistant variant. Don't buy any of that crap that Davis posts where he blows off the death rates from Covid...
We stopped wearing masks virtually everywhere in Colorado several weeks ago.  Maybe two months?  Before the delta variant was big news for sure.  Our delta resurgence has been pretty moderate and I suppose mostly limited to the unvaccinated, if CO follows the general trend.   Presently, I am OK with this state of affairs.  In other words I have no intention of donning my mask again, unless I fly or go someplace where the mask is mandatory.  If I knew anyone closely who refused to get vaccinated, I certainly would encourage him or her to change their minds, for their own sake.

I read this article this morning, it is linked on Real Clear.  I found this line to be abhorrent:

"There are a few unvaccinated for religious reasons, and people of color who have historical reasons to distrust public health workers and the CDC."

The author exists only to excoriate conservatives (some of whom I admit are listening to the wrong voices in the wrong bubble).  But in the same article, the author lays down this amazingly patronizing and offensive line, giving POC a pass, because of decades old mistreatment.  How stupid does this author think blacks and Latinos are?  If I were black, this sort of patronizing drivel would drive me insane.

Good for him, did you read it?  One key line:

"The governor said the state’s hospital capacity has always driven his decision making around statewide pandemic restrictions. Right now, the capacity isn’t threatened and so he doesn’t think new restrictions are necessary."

Also, consistent with what James and other's have said:

"Dr. Rachel Herlihy, the state’s top epidemiologist, said Colorado is seeing a “pretty dramatic” increase in cases, largely among unvaccinated people. Between July 1 and July 24, unvaccinated people accounted for 80% of cases, 87% of hospitalization and 92% of deaths in Colorado.

Herlihy said that while there have been cases among vaccinated people, those people are much less likely to get severely ill or die from coronavirus."

I did not see the presser of course, but our governor has been measured and reasonably apolitical since the beginning of the pandemic.
