Need a little DSI help

Posted By Larry Durst

Rick,
You might want to check out the DSI group on Yahoo--they can help you with more specific questions about the DSI. FWIW, I started out with a monochrome (Starlight Xpress MX716--about $700 used these days) after first using a webcam for planets and moon. I have been very happy shooing monochrome, then adding filters, particular shooting from the suburbs. It is easier to learn processing with just one channel, and I also think that black & white can be quite thrilling to many subjects. In fact, before moving to color filters, you could even think about going to Ha if you have much light pollution (although Ha does require longer exposures, thus guiding, which should be a second step after mastering shorter exposures).
Plus, do not worry about your scope--I use an LX90 with pretty good results. (Of course, in a quest to spend even more money, I always am thinking about going to a good GEM!)
Hope all this rambling helps,
Larry

M33

Louie,
I also tried it recently, and was also surprised how much time it really needs, but I think you've captured and brought out far more than your initial post indicated! Nice job.
Question: how are you liking the .8 reducer with the ZS66 SD? I'm giving up on my Meade 6.3--way too much vignetting, although I really like the wider field for many targets. (Not that you can find the WO reducer).
Again, great job,
Larry

First LRGB of M42

Posted By Larry Durst

Hi Bob,
Glad to see those filters finally seeing some photons wink If that's your first LRGB, you're off to an amazing start! I also think you've held the core quite well.
Congrats!
Larry
PS: How's the guiding going with PHD and that mount?

Another M45

Vince,
You nailed that one! Can you share your stats--times, processing, etc? I've tried M45 twice already this year and can't get it right!
Thanks,
Larry

Dietmar,
Another excellent image--I really like the sharpness of the filaments yet the fineness of the nebulosity. Great processing! Which part of the process are you doing in Pix and which in PS? Always interested to hear about people's routines.
Thanks,
Larry

Greg,
It doesn't get more thrilling that that! That is one dramatic FOV. Actually, I am astonished by the surrounding star field--you don't often see that.

My humble reworked M27

Paul,
Excellent image--and all that extra time really smoothed it out. Nice job!
Larry
PS: You're another person (along with Dietmar) I noticed is using PixInsight and PhotoShop. I've become a big fan of Pix and was wondering what you use PS for that you don't do in Pix?

Now that's a rose! That camera is proving pretty amazing in your hands. I really love the perspective you get on these large objects.

I'm looking forward to the color, but it's a stunning image in Ha all by itself. That scope looks like a winner.

Paul,
That's a great capture of an elusive target. Your processing really brings out lots of detail.
