Horsehead and Running Man

Posted By Larry Durst

Alan,
Congrats on the new camera! Your Horsehead really captures a lot even at those shorter subs. Very smooth, too, as is your Running Man. Did you use any "de-noise" filters in your processing?
Best of luck with the guiding--it will definitely be worth the effort (I guess you'll be using the older DSI-c as the guider?).

Bob,
Can't wait. Is that the same time as NEAF?

Hey Jason,
Looks good on my monitor, but I'm on a laptop now, too. I know what you mean about different monitors...I work on a laptop but always check my nice LCD and an older CRT before saying "done" as the blacks are so much darker on the good ones. I have found that really paying close attention to the low end of the histogram to avoid any clipping (which visually might look fine on the laptop) has been key to making them work.
Regards,
Larry

software for imaging?

Posted By Larry Durst

Hi Darrell,
You're about to hear about lots of personal preferences based on individual experiences--that's good as there are lots of choices out there. But my initial suggestion is: why not try to use the software that comes with the DSI at first? You might just like it. (I must admit that I don't use it as I have an older DSI Pro I use for guiding only.)
I can tell you that I like AstroArt a lot, and it does have drivers for the DSI line. It works for both image acquisition and processing your images, and is fairly easy to learn.
Many of the commercial software packages have downloadable demo versions which let you try them out before plunking down your money. Yahoo Groups also have groups dedicated to each of the applications, as well as the DSI.
I would advise this, keep it simple and have lots of fun. This hobby can be pretty addictive(and expensive!) so take your time to discover your own preferences.

So Who'sgoing to NEAIC & NEAF

Posted By Larry Durst

Bob,
I wish my schedule would let me attend NEAF this year. To everyone else, if you have never gone, go! Rarely do you get to see and touch and talk about so much neat equipment all at once. Warning: leave your credit card in the car or the temptation to buy that new camera or mount or scope will be too great.
Best of luck with it, and have fun!
Larry
PS: To everyone else, bring your families along particularly if the weather is good and the solar scopes will be out.

Cluster in Scorpius

Louie,
You do the cluster justice. A beautiful image. I never have the confidence to shoot open clusters; you really have a way of making each star shine!
Larry
PS: Your previous post was also a stunner.
