Hi Greg:

38% approval is pretty low and I doubt Biden will fall much lower.  There is a "floor" of hard-core supporters who will approve of Biden no matter what he does.  Trump enjoyed this floor of hard-core support too - at about 38% approval.   A different 38% of course!  cool

If you have not looked at 538's interactive comparison graphs, they are pretty cool.  538 averages out poll results over time, so Biden is currently shown at about 44% approval.  The trend line is certainly there.   Love or hate 538's politics, they sure know how to do cool graphics.

The LEFTIST Democrat Party WEAPONIZING the FBI and the JUSTICE DEP'T

You'd be wrong about that of course.  I read the memo and thought about it for a while.  While I am not in favor of anyone threatening the school board, school administrators, teachers and so on, and I am not in favor actual violence against anyone, my thoughts after reading the memo and reflecting on it are:

1.  This is not something where the Federal Government needs to become involved at all.  Actual threats against the school board, a teacher, etc. or any real violence must be handled by the state and local police investigators and the state and local courts.  I am not sure any federal crime can even be committed under these circumstances.  Yes, the memo mentions the FBI and DOJ meeting with the local agencies and so on, but why is that necessary?   Any crimes directed against a school board member or teacher are within the jurisdiction of the State and local agencies.  The Feds should mind their own business and let the state and local agencies mind theirs.

2.  I too believe that this sort of memo is threatening to those who disagree with school boards or teachers in a vocal but legal and reasonable manner.  It is far too easy for a school board member or teacher to feel "threatened" by an angry parent and be emboldened by a memo like this and to call in law enforcement, specifically or unintentionally to stifle debate.

3.  Whether intentional or not, this memo comes across as a prior restraint on free speech and it is easy to see that the predominately D teachers and school boards* are the beneficiaries and the predominately R "angry parents" are those being restrained.  This makes the memo appear to be politically motivated, even if Garland was truly motivated by the safety of the school boards across the nation.  *(At least in my community of Denver, the school board and teaching community is monolithically D.  In Colorado Springs and other R communities there might be R dominated boards.  I don't know.  Rich might.)

You won't get the joke Rich, you never do, but my first thought after reading the memo and considering who started this thread was a snide reply along the lines of:

"So Rich, I guess you are in favor of threats and actual violence against school boards, teachers, and administrators then?"

I'm glad at Least I was able to bring this move by the Justice Dep't to your attention.

If I hadn't, 3 weeks down the road when you read (past tense) stories that the FBI (2 weeks prior to your knowledge of it) came to a parent's house to intimidate them and threaten them with jail, you might be totally in the dark.

Just trying to keep you up to date, that's all.  wink
Apathetic?  I was a delegate to the local R convention in '96.  I always vote and I keep myself apprised of current events.  I'll admit, I don't spend all of my spare time posting unhinged political screeds on a tiny hobbyist bulletin board,  but who does?

Seriously, you've never heard of the IBD/TIPP poll?  They are very highly regarded.

No, Quinnipiac is a very highly regarded polling company.  What the heck is your point?  Do you still think that it is ok to threaten and assault school board members?

This is the dumbest post I've seen in a long while.  If the above were true Rich, you'd be in a federal prison camp by now, toiling away on a work gang.  Or maybe dead, killed by the jack-booted DOJ thugs.

You know what really bugs me - I too disagree with the thinking behind Garland's memo, as I detailed yesterday in the other thread.

You and I appear to agree that the memo was a bad idea and politically biased.   But you so ridiculously overstate the scope of the government's potential overreach that you absolutely lose the argument with any rational being.  "Totalitarian..."  Geez, way to to just torpedo any actual reasons why Garland should not have released that memo.  Idiot.

PS (on edit).  I just re-read the whole thread and see that Rod was talking about guns, not rifles when Rich switched him.  The following post is still true, in my opinion, but I no longer think Rod is missing a point.  Rich merely tricked him and I missed that when I jumped in to the middle of a thread.

Hi Rod:

I think you are missing a point here.  The point is that handguns, not rifles kill so many people.  Yet the gun law crowd wants to ban a specific rifle style.  There is a logical disconnect that is important.  Since rifles are used so infrequently in crimes, why ban them?

Here are some possible replies I've seen to that question:

1.  Even though rifles are infrequently used in murders, they are often used in mass shootings like Las Vegas.

2.  Rifles like the AR-15 and similar platforms are not used for defense or hunting, which are the two reasons behind Heller.  (This one is BS since people do hunt with so-called "assault weapons" and tons of people use them for home defense.)  Even so, I have seen this bad reason thrown into the conversation.

Personally, I am pretty sure that the gun law crowd goes after the "assault weapon" style of rifle because of the way they look, not for any legally compelling reason.  They would go after all guns, but the 2nd Amendment as interpreted in Heller prohibits it.
