More SE Alaska

I'm a civil engineer, so I sometimes take photos of "civil things" when we vacation (my wife just rolls her eyes). This fire hydrant in Petersburg isn't remarkable--I have better photos of fire hydrants--but it works remarkably well with the artwork on the shop behind it.

bright NGC this month??

I suggest checking out Steve O'Meara's "Herschel 400 Observing Guide". It's organized by month, which makes it very useful for your type of question. Your C11 should be able to grab everything in the book in dark skies.

Here are a few of my favorites (some are in O'Meara and some aren't): NGC 6207 (Gx near M13); NGC 6231 (bright OC in the tail of Scorpius; may be too low for Oregon); Veil Nebula (NGC 6960, 6992, & 6996); NGC 6522+NGC 6528 (two adjacent GC that fit in one eyepiece field); Blue Snowball (NGC 7662); NGC 7006 (GC in Delphinus); Saturn Nebula (NGC 7009); and Helix Nebula (NGC 7293).

Also, don't forget the feast of wonderful Messier objects this time of year.

The FirstScope is a 75 mm f/4 (300 mm focal length). The supplied eyepieces are 20 mm Huygens and 4 mm SR (Ramsden?), and produce 15x and 75x. Unfortunately, the area of good focus in only about half the field diameter, apparently due to field curvature in the eyepiece.

My shortest good eyepiece is a 10 mm Vixen, which gives 30x. It looks good all the way across the field. I then decided to try my best eyepiece, a 13 mm Ethos. Unfortunately, because of the double barrel size I couldn't rack it in far enough to come to focus. However, it looks impressive so I took a photo.
