I had the ED-80 out for 1st light last night also. My eyepieces only took me to 240x, but the view of Mars was spectacular!

Couple of questions:
The focus lock seems like it takes too much pressure to lock down. I feel like I'm going to strip it. What's you're experience with this?

What eyepieces did you use to star-test? I felt there was a tad bit of color at 240x on Arcturus, really minimal, but there. I was using a 2x Ultima Barlow and a 5mm Ultima. Plossl. I couldn't see any false color on Mars though.

My collimation seems spot-on also. Pinpoint stars with round airy disc.

That's not a telescope! That's an 1862 Spingfield 16lb cannon. Who you trying to fool?

Nice Cannon, but I don't think the mount will take the recoil from lobbing the shell!!

I've got an Orion ED-80 and an Astroview 100.

The Astroview gathers more light, but the ED-80 does a better job with the light it gathers. The optics in the 80 are just better corrected, so I enjoy the view more.

When I really want to gather light, I pull out a 9.25.

I have an Orion ED-80, an Astroview 100, and a Celestron C4R (4in F/10 Achromat).

Both the ED-80 and the Celestron are very decent planetary performers. Neither will cost 1500 bucks, so you could buy some pretty cool eyepieces also. My preference goes towards the ED-80 of those three. I recently lent it out to a friend of mine and he thinks it's a super little scope too.

I use the ED-80 on both a photo tripod and a CG-4 mount. If the next batch of these are as good as the one I got, it's a hands-down winner.

There's not much to do with an out of focus image. It doesn't look like your seeing conditions were cooperating either.

OLD QUESTION.. Meade Vs. Celestron GPS

I can't comment on Meades, but I bought a 9.25GPS last year (My 1st big scope)

Recently the Alt clutch broke and has to go back for repairs, but I'm still impressed with the scope. The carrying handles are super, and I love the overall package, especially the optics.

BTW, I spent literally hours upon hours on your website when I was trying to learn the differences between scopes/designs and performance.

Thank you for all the work (Ok, it sounds like a boatload of fun) you put into those reviews.
