Alt. Bearing Size?

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

What size alt. bearing should I use for a 12.5" truss style scope. I have heard the bearing should be at least the dia. of the mirror size. I was thinking even bigger. My mirror box will be around 17" x 17". A 12.5" bearing would look really small against the mirror box.

Thanks in advance,

That's my boy ...

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

Just took this picture of my 3 year old son and thought I would share. He likes to sleep with his books. Take note of the book he has in his hands.

Next he will be asking to borrow the 12.5" Starfinder =smile

Clear skies,

Cell mount : Aluminum vs.steel?

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

Any cons against making a cell out of aluminum stock?

12.5" - 2" Pyrex Mirror

I am going to mount my UO cell into a mirror box by making a cell frame. The UO has three mounting points, so I am going to make a frame that would accept these mounting points.

Reading Collimation Pattern

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

I recently read the thread about aligning the focuser of a refractor to the lens. So tonight I tried it with my ST80. The two circles were off. So I loosened the three screws that held the focuser to the tube and was able to get the two circles to line up a lot closer. I still need to get the slop out of the draw tube and it should be even better.

Here's my question... I also tested my Meade 390 an noticed something completely different. I saw 3 circle patterns. One was violet-purple, one was clear and the other was smaller and clear positioned between the other two. The pattern was positioned from 10 o'clock, centered, 4 o'clock.
I loosened the focuser to see if I could get them lined up and I couldn't. What's causing this? Could the doublets be positioned incorrectly in the cell?

Thanks in advance,

Tim Hornbeck

Siebert Contest Guess

The chrome tube breaks apart in three sections that are threaded. The first segment (closest to the binoviewer) contains a double element design. The second segment (middle) is just a spacer without elements. The third segment (lower) is also a double element design. Multiple magnification (1.5x, 2.0x, 3.0x, 3.5x, 4.0x, and 7x) is achieved through various combinations of stacking and/or reversing the segments with or without the spacer.

Re: Things a little slow for film?

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

Last Saturday I was able to take some shots of the 1st qtr. moon and Saturn with my ST80 @ prime focus with my OM-1. It was really cold, but think I took a dozen or so pictures. I was able to get some Kodak 100ASA, 36 exp. film for dirt cheap. So I got a ways to go before the roll is finished. If the shots turn out I will post.

Clear skies and warmer weather,

Here is another shot of the Milky Way (Cygnus) from my back yard. OM-1, 28mm Zuiko, 800ASA, ~40 sec. on photo tripod. Pointing straight up at zenith.

Opinions on Reflector Crayford focusers ...

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

Look for opinions on a good Crayford style focuser for a reflector. I am working on a truss conversion project and need to decide which unit to use. I really don't want to install a Synta R&P style now (I actually have) and then upgrade later.

Thanks and clear skies,

Meade Starfinder Mirrors ...

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

Does anyone know who makes the mirrors for the Meade Starfinder line? Are they ground in-house or made by another company? I have a 12.5 f/4.8 that was made 3/11/99. It looks like there are initials "J.L." and "G.P." in marker on the bottom.

Thanks,

Tim H.
