If you're looking at buying some check out Helix Observing Accessories (on the main Astromart page). I bought two not too long ago and I love them. They're definitely a winner in my book. I haven't heard much about the new HD orthos but if they're as good as the regular ones then you won't be disappointed if you try them. And btw the people at Helix are a pleasure to deal with.

I'd be interested in finding out what brand of dob you were planning to purchase? I own an Orion XT10 (10" f/5) and I see very little detail on the planets. I'm beginning to think my mirror isn't of very high quality. And before anyone asks yes it is colluminated (sp?). I would sugguest getting the 8" but I would look for an f/7 or so.

On the other hand I bought a TV-102 (prolly way out of your price range) and I LOVE IT!! The detail level is much higher than the dob and I find it gives much more pleasing views.

The main point of this post is look for a high quality mirror no matter what size you decide to get. I think that is the most important factor of all. Hope I could help you some.

Thanks for the replys. I'm currently mounting my TV-102 on my CG-5 and it's around 10 lbs. The shakes aren't that bad but I figured they'd be better with wooden legs. I think I'm going to try my hand at building a set of legs and if that doesn't work I'll probably buy a set of Hands on Optics legs. If anyone else has some pictures or plans of wooden legs they would still be greatly appreciated.

I'm glad to hear you finished it. I didn't realize that the blood would bother you so much otherwise I probably wouldn't have recommended it but IMHO overall it is a great series. Once again I'm glad you enjoyed it.

PS. If you're interested you might want to read the book sometime. I read it about six months after seeing the series and I enjoyed it as much if not more than the series.

Thanks for the replys guys, I just got home with a big 5'x 5' piece of Baltic Birch and it is a heck of a piece of wood. I checked out Home Depot but the only stuff they had didn't look to good to me so I just sprang for the good stuff. Thanks again.

I think someone may have done this. Check out the stellafane website if you're interested I think I remember someone having a tube made of coffee cans that turned out pretty well.
