Major Prom Today 9:15-10:45AM EDT

Posted By Alan Koff

If anyone got a picture of this mornings prom/ejection please post it.
Squarely on the limb, a beautiful and massive prom bordering on a coronal mass ejection was evident. This is the largest prom by 10x that I've seen since last October's show. My less than acceptable photo efforts were for naught, sorry.
I'm praying that someone got a shot of this.
Here's a pic of the PST piggybacked on the C8 for the first time.

Apogee RA-88s/Hercules Mount

Posted By Alan Koff

Finally got my rig together, the 8" Hercules mount was about a 1/4" to narrow for the RA-88s, so I went with the 12" version. Tim at Helix is coming out with a 10" version in the very near future. This mount is smooth and can be dialed to hold even these binocs at zenith. I am very pleased with this set-up; simple, light and very stable....also very strong.

Used Burgess 127, Should I ?

Posted By Alan Koff

Buy one? Honest opinions would be greatly appreciated.
My new lifestyle, condo in FLA, has crimped my style a bit, no garage so the SCT has to go.
Should I just spend the bucks on a nice TV 102 or Tak?
Help me out here!
Big Al
PS I'm using a fork mount.

A Fine Annular Eclipse in Juno Beach

Posted By Alan Koff

Some nice flares and surface features with a Pac-man size bite out of the old Sol. A very nice happy hour. Hope all the passer-bys enjoyed the views.

Dielectric Diagonals

Posted By Alan Koff

Just had my first session my new WO dielectric SCT diagonal and all I can say is WOW!!! Not only did I not know what I've been missing, but these diagonals are real easy on the eyes as well.
Using a Russian built 5" Mak-Cass at 140x, Jupiter showed real contrast and detail in both hemishperes, even with less than ideal skies.
What an edge this piece of gear has provided me, it is well worth the bucks. And all this time I've used my funds for 'designer' EPs, when I should have concentrated more funds on the diagonal.
This has been an eye-opening experience.

WSP ??? First Time For Everything !!!

Posted By Alan Koff

This will be my first WSP, although last year I had to sell my tix at the last minute, so I'm doubly psyched this year.
I'm bringing my Intes MN66 mounted on a SVP tripod. What measures do I have to take to maintain a steady or level rig on the sand? Or is not a real concern?
Happy Holidaze,
Al

WSP - I Can Almost Taste It !!!

Posted By Alan Koff

I know all of you probably noticed that there are only four weeks and counting 'til WSP. This time will pass quickly for me as I start a new job on the 30th by traveling to Cali for the week. Then I'm back and off to Orlando and Tampa to 'buddy-up' will distributors. I only have a week after that before WSP, the only week in February not 'planned'. The best part of these events are the people we meet, old friends and the new friends we will make.
See you all,
Al

Waiting for Jupiter

Posted By Alan Koff

Well, Jupiter has finally made its way back into the morning sky and away from the moon enough to give some quality 'Red Spot' views. While I didn't take the time to do any imaging, only had 45 minutes before the moon was high enough to scatter light off the dew, I did take full observing advantage of a well positioned Great Red Spot this morning.
Of course, when getting up early one has to sacrifice good Saturn viewing. Oh well.
Just thought you might want to know. wink

Favorite Targets at WSP

Posted By Alan Koff

Time to stir things up, time to get psyched-up!
Something for everyone, even some Moon action.
What are you targeting?
I'll let you in on my fave, and it's probably one of yours.
My wife and I call it 'Big O'!!! Not 'The Big O'. Omega Centauri.
Sombrero transits a little earlier.
So if the skies are clear and you are awake at 3A.M. and the dew isn't driving you nuts, look for me.
This is my short, short list.
Now if only the Moon weren't so close to Jupiter........

Baader Coma Corrector

Posted By Alan Koff

Anyone have an experience with Baader's coma corrector?
I'm thinking of matching it up to a Hyperion 24mm and my China 32mm 70 degree EP for my 10" f/4.7 DOB.
