You know what the worst thing is? When you can look up at night and can just barely see stars through a haze of fog. That's what Vancouver was like mid last week. Some rare cloudless winter nights (we get about as many as you can count on your fingers), but I *still* couldn't observe!

I hate to ask the obvious, but are you sure you're pointing at the sun? It can be very hard to get a little telescope like that one pointed accurately without actually looking into the sun because it just doesn't cast a very long shadow.

Maybe just a fellow that doesn't know much about what he has, or someone who bought the telescope for resale, etc.

I wouldn't say that it's outwardly suspicious, though he does seem like a jerk with his policies.

By description it doesn't sound like the one stolen from the University.

Well, the ETX is a Mak (as you've implied) and Mak's are generally about as close to APO like views as you can get.

Still, I think Celestron's are generally better built. The focusing on the ETX will be hard at azimuth unless you're a little girl. I think you'll also appreciate the fact that the Celestron does not use an integrated flip mirror like the ETX. I dislike the flip mirror on my NexStar 4.

In addition, I think the starpointer that comes on the NexStar, while cheap and horrible, is a lot more practically useful and more suitably matched to its telescope than the ETX's finder. It's not a Telrad, but it's easy to use and it's handier than a tiny finderscope.

You'd also be getting Starbright coatings on the NexStar 5. Does that ETX have UHTC coatings?

On another note, I've heard that the ETX series of telescopes uses plastic gears. I can't substantiate that so don't listen to me smile

What's really sad, though, is when a shop tries to sell a used scope for almost as much as, or in some cases more than, a new one would cost! Guess they need just a couple sales like that a month to pay the rent smile

OIII Filter - what's it do?

It filters out more or less the entire visible light spectrum except a very narrow spectral range of visible light. That range is centered around the OIII wavelength (500 some odd angstroms). This filter may drastically improve your images of some specific nebulae, but it will make everything else worse.

They're quite expensive, especially considering their limited usefulness, but for the nebulae on which they work, they really do work.
