20mm Research grade wide field

Posted By matt elliott

A friend of mine has one of these and i was thinking about trading for it but the barrel doesn't have any writing on it except 20X wide. Does any one know if some of these had this type of writing on the barrel?
All the ones i have seen read Meade 20mm wide angle.

Mirror coating

Posted By matt elliott

I have a antares 6" mirror that is about 5 months old and it has started looking very hazy as well as the diagonal.
Could this just be the coatings failing or maybe the mirror is just not polished out all the way?
It seemed alright when i first got it. Where is a good place to get it recoated? Any opinions are appreciated.

Glued secondary ?

Posted By matt elliott

I have a coulter 13" dob with a 3.1" secondary glued to the metal plate. I am getting some astigmatism at medium to medium high power.
Could remounting the secondary with silicon help this?
Any ideas?

Milben 60mm refractor

Posted By matt elliott

A friend of my wife gave me a 60mm Milben refractor. It looks pretty old.
It came in the original box with all the parts. Wood tripod,3 eyepieces, and barlow. It needs cleaned up.
Does anybody know anything about these. I can't seem to find any information on these.

TAL-100 RSM 100mm f10 refractor

Posted By matt elliott

I had two of these and optically they are outstanding. The best contrast i have seen in any telescope. The down sides are very short focus travel some eyepieces won't reach focus, and the mount is not the sturdiest. The clock drive with it is really bad and i had to replace mine. I would suggest getting the optical tube assembly and putting it on a different mount with a battery powered drive. Hope this information helps you out. Also the color correction on these are very close to ed performance refractors.

Dove Tail & BO Ring

Posted By matt elliott

Hi Greg
Could you tell me what the distance is that is needed for the dovetail to fit? I have a 1278 coming and have a unistar mount and don't know if the rings will fit over my 3" plate. My mount is made to fit without the dovetail bar. The rings need to fit over my 3" plate. I may have to do some modifying. I would appreciate this information. Thanks Matt

What Eyepieces should I get?

Posted By matt elliott

Greg
You might want to try the 6mm in your scope first the eye relief may not be that bad in use. I have had eyepieces look really tight on eye relief but in the scope were pretty decent. For as other eyepieces with greater eye relief if you are on a budget i would get a 12mm ultima and a good 2x barlow. The celestron ultimas have been the best all round eyepieces i have used for not a lot of money. Hope this helps. Matt

8" StarHopper help

Posted By matt elliott

Alfred
It sounds like a balance problem. The more vertical you go at a certain point the weight of the telrad will pull the scope back. If you have the new version starhopper i am not very familier with it but you can probably tighten the altitude clutch on both bearings. The old starhopppers had a sliding dovetail which moved the balance back and forth. On my home built dob i use a rigel quick finder because it weighs almost nothing and it don't make my scope get off balance at near vertical position. You also can take some sand paper and slightly sand on the altitude bearings to ruff them up. Thats what i did with the rigel finder. smile Hope this helps.

Celestron omni xlt 102 vs 120

I have a orion 120mm and have had a celestron 102. I like the 120 far better. There is a considerable amount of light difference.
The 120 is not much heavier and for $100 difference you get a lot more scope in my opinion.
