Televue Pronto: green halo, & baffling

Posted By Bill Barrett

I picked up a Televue Pronto a few months ago. I notice when I look at bright objects like Jupiter, there is a green tinge around the object which seems to effect the contrast. Is there anything I can do about that? My old Stellarvue AT1010 didn't do that, and I found the Stellarvue had much darker backgrounds. The mechanics on the Pronto are unquestionably better, but is there anything I can do to improve the contrast and get rid of the green?

APM focuser for 6" Jaegers?

Posted By Bill Barrett

I have an old 6" F8 Jaegers which gives great views. But I have always thought it would benefit from a better focuser. I went to the D&G website and saw the APM focuser and with the D&G backplate, it would be perfect fit. Has anyone had any experience with the APM focusers? Recommended? thank you, Bill

4" F15 Refractor Should I?

Posted By Bill Barrett

I have an old 4" (4.25" actually) F15 Jaegers lens. I've heard these can make very good planetary scopes. I don't have the time or skill to build a nice OTA. So I've been in touch a builder who will put together a complete OTA for about $900. I'm excited about the process, but are these lenses good enough to warrant the effort? Is the old long tube achromat really dead?

Re: Low Budget 4" refractor

Dan;

Did you flock the inside of entire tube assembly, and is there a trick to applying the paper deep into the tube? thank you, Bill

Jaegers 4" F15 is up and running. thank you

Posted By Bill Barrett

Several days ago I posted & whined about not having the time to build a tube for a 4" Jaegers lens and Vixen focuser that I had sitting around collecting dust. With the encouragement from some of our forum members, I spent the week end putting the tube together. A few star tests and adjustments (had the crown reversed) later, I was absolutely thrilled! Classic star test, excellent contrast, and resolution. Absolutely minimal color even on Venus.
The unpainted aluminum tube looks more like a pole vault than a modern instrument, but it is a true planetary performer. Now for a few finishing touches, and I'll be ready for the next star party...but it just won't fit in our Saturn Sedan

Do I need a PST or just a solar filter?

Posted By Bill Barrett

I just got a quick peek through a solar filter the other day, and was really taken with the idea of solar viewing. Would I need to pick up something like the new PST or would a full aperture glass filer be adequate? thank you, Bill

Refractor baffling techniques, maximizing contrast

Posted By Bill Barrett

There have been some great discussions and ideas in this forum about baffling and lining refractor tubes. But it seems like there is no one agreed upon method.

I understand we want block spurious light from the optical path. So we want the inside of the tube to be non reflective. But exactly how many baffles do we need and is their placement carved in stone? Or is there flexibility around placement and number so that we block stray light without inducing vignetting?
thank you, Bill

Differences in diagonals?

Posted By Bill Barrett

Sometimes I have to wonder how much difference is there really between a generic and well known brand name piece of equipment? Most recently we needed to pick up a new star diagonal, and found they can range between $50 to over $200.00. If all other parts of the optical train are =, will we see a difference comparing a $200 everbright to the $50 mirror diagonal? thank you, Bill

Ordering AP 2.7" today

Posted By Bill Barrett

The old 6" F8 Jaegers has struggled long enough. I'm going to bite the bullet and order the 2.7" ap focuser today.

RA tension adjustment on old Starfinder mount?

I have an old Meade Starfinder mount (circa 1980). Does anyone know if there is a way to add some tension to the RA axis?

thank you,

Bill
