Does anyone know the identity of the thick grease we all love to hate that is used on inexpensive gears and shafts to hide poor machining tolerances?

I have a 'special' need for the stuff.

I just wanted to share the morning after a nice night out in west-central Arizona.

The light clouds began moving in at 4:00am, no problem.

17.5" Pierre Schwaar with "Big Foot" and binoviewer. Oh, and my trusty sidekick, 1970 Dodge.

2" ZOOM Where?

Who wouldn't want a 2" zoom eyepiece?

I hope our best manufacturer will read this again.

Say 7-20mm, 60*+ field of view. Certainly has the potential to be a hotest seller.

I have an Apogee (Nikon) zoom modified to 2". Really useful and terrific views. Maybe a freshly designed 2" could have a larger field at lower magnification range.

Most Disgusting Objects...

Howdy!

I would like to know what deep sky or other objects disgust you the most. I know, it sounds foolish, so I suppose it is.

But surely there are objects that you wish were different with more or less stuff or just the image gives you a less than euphoric flow. sad Me, you ask?.....

The Double Cluster in Perseus. Specifically 869. Who the heck put that stupid circlet of stars in there? It looks wrong, scrungy, crumpy and dumpy. Looks like a poorly sewn
end of a sock! Can you imagine wearing that sock with the threads making blisters on your toes as you run after Grenelda? cwy

And another one....NGC 4038-9 The "Antennae"
Who put that vulgar thing in the sky? shocked Makes me scratch every time.

Deep Impact Site

Here we are in far west-central Arizona awaiting the Temple 1 Deep Impact event. Scopes from 8 to 18".

Great night! The comet's coma brightened and allowed us to watch the object until it sat in the western horizon. The coma brightness didn't change perceptably on Monday, the day after impact!!

We cheered, yelled and raised our diet sodas :S to the people involved in the mission. No harm, great show, great feat, great science, money well spent.

I see ATWB is offering Solar Ha prominence filters to fit various scopes. They are advertised as tunable.

Does anyone have some experience with these systems?

This is an ugly set-up! It's my CR-6 with a coleostat. I detest having to bend down, sit on the ground and do the balance thingy.

It works perfectly but I need a 6" flat mirror instead of this 4.5".
