OTA flexure

I have a Celestron C11 with carbon fiber tube and a Losmandy G11 Gemini that I aquired a few years ago that I have yet to use. And frankly, I don't have much experience using equatorial mounts. Well, I finally plan to start using it.

I'm wondering how much flexure to the tube is induced when the scope is pointing in such a way that the OTA is hanging off the dovetail plate, versus the tube sitting more or less on top of the plate? Does installing the scope in a set of rings alleviate or eliminate the problem? Do the materials that the OTA is made of, for instance, carbon fiber vs aluminum, have any bearing on the rigidity of the OTA?

I kind of have my own ideas on this, but I can't speak from experience, since I'm traditionally more of a Dob person. A problem like this might not be a big deal for visual observation, but it seems like it might have an effect on imaging, which I think I would like to try. Any thoughts?

ducks on the field

While attending the Big XII baseball tournament here in Oklahoma City, something funny occurred this evening.

During the Oklahoma vs Missouri game, in the top of the 7th inning, two mallard ducks flew in and landed on the infield. They must have been used to being around people, because they let the field crew get pretty close to them, but never close enough to catch them. The field crew spent about five minutes chasing them all over the field while the booth played quaking sound effects and the three stooges theme. I halfway expected to hear "Afflack!" blaring over the speakers. After they appeared to tire of the excitment, the ducks finally flew off, and Oklahoma won 4-3.

Ya had to be there.

Here's one for you mirror experts.

While cleaning the mirror in my Obsession this weekend, using Kriege’s method, I noticed what appeared to be pitting for about a 4” radius from the center of the mirror. At first I thought it was stuck-on dirt, but on closer inspection, it looked kind of like pitting. I only saw this while the mirror was wet. I had not seen this on the mirror prior to cleaning it, and as soon as the mirror was rinsed and was dry, it looked like a perfectly clean, normal mirror.

Was I seeing something wrong with my mirror, or was it likely some optical effect that I was seeing as a consequence of the mirror being wet?

Hey, I can't believe it's time for Okie-Tex and I haven't heard any buzz about it here!

Who's going? I'll be there this weekend. I'll be there for the whole week. I've been looking forward to it all year, and I ain't about to let a pinched sciatic nerve stop me! It'll probably keep me from hiking the mesas, though. Hopefully, I won't run out of Lortabs and Flexoril.

I've been thinking about purchasing a PST. What I would like to know is, how good are the views (espesially with regard to sunspots and prominances), and are they worth the price? Is there a better alternative for approximately the same price?

Help! which Catseye Autocollimator--XL or XLK?

I just sent an order in this past week to Jim Fly for the Catseye Triplepack Pro XL collimation system. This week, he made available a new autocollimator, called the XLK, that has a second offset hole in it for tweaking the collimation to a new level of perfection.

I'm wondering if any of the collimation illuminati here have had a chance to wrap their minds around this new tool? What do you think? I'm considering upgrading my order for the new collimator. I would think that the folks with very fast Newts would likely get the most benefit from it.

After looking at the info on the Catseye website, it looks to me like it will be a great tool.
