Hi Jim,
Great shot! For mosquitos try tucking a "Bounce" fabric softener sheet under your belt. Supposedly these work well for keeping the biters away.

There are two other utilities you may want to investigate to help with planetary imaging when the planet is moving from side to side in an AVI. The two utilities are AVI2BMP and PPMCENTRE.

AVI2BMP takes an AVI and extracts the frames into individually numbered BMP files. Once you've done that use PPMCENTRE.

PPMCENTRE reads a series of BMP files and rewrites each BMP whilst centering the planetary object in the middle of each new BMP. The result is a series of BMPS that have the planet essentially motionless in the middle of the each frame. You can align and stack the BMPS directly in Registax very easily since the planet won't drift at all.

Just google PPMCENTRE and AVI2BMP to find the downloads. Both are free.

A fine image indeed, Ron. Hope you don't mind but I made some adjustments using Registax 4. Tweaked the wavelets and moved the blue channel down a bit, then a slight change in HSL so more of the banding is enhanced.

Two great shots Eric!

I have loads of AVIs from years past, some of which I'd like to try to enhance using the techniques you've described. Is this technique documented somewhere on a website or is it something you've developed yourself?

Also, it would be interesting if you could post images of your original processed AVIs just for comparison.

I think the IrRGB image is better than the RGB. I see more cloud detail in the Ir image.

Frame Rates

I saw in your recent Mars post that you're using a Toucam and although what James said is true, the Toucam is limited by the fact that it only transfers data at USB 1.0 speeds. Using higher frame rates with a Toucam means you introduce data loss because the firmware in the Toucam needs to reduce the amount of data contained in each frame in order to send it to the PC.

Generally with a Toucam the highest framerate I've used is 15FPS.

I also believe most webcam imagers on this forum recommend when the seeing is really good to lower the framerate to 10FPS on order to capture the most detail.

OTOH if you buy a Dragonfly or similar camera that can do up to 60FPS via USB 2.0 then the faster the better.

If you can afford a CDK 20 then you don't want to mess around with a $100 web camera for planetary imaging. The Toucam can only do 15fps without introducing noise into the image stream.
There are better cameras in the $600 and up range that can do 60fps without noise. Look at Dragonfly, DMK, etc to get better quality.
Of course seeing conditions and good transparency are also a must but I presume you're in a location that has those if you have a 20 inch scope.

MOV files of Jupiter with Canon T1i

I have a T1i and haven't tried shooting video of Jupiter with it but I have a couple suggestions.

One thing to try is a variable polarizing filter. I use that on the moon to reduce brightness at the eyepiece.

The second suggestion is to mask the off the C11's objective in order to reduce the amount of light being delivered at the eyepiece.

I don't believe there is a way to disable the automatic exposure setting when taking HD video with the T1i since doing so implies you would set the exposure manually. This would not be a good thing to do in video as lighting conditions can (and do) change frequently over the course of any video recording.

I have used it successfuly several times with a T1i. Have you checked the camera settings and made sure Live View mode is still enabled ? That was one problem I had initially since I don't use Live Mode for taking stills since it consumes battery.
