Christmas sunspot

Posted By Mike Ashburn

Hello Paul,

A nice image and also your posts a few days ago. Its interesting to see the changes in this sunspot over the last few days. Here is another image to add to the sequence.

Taken UT 03:16 on the 23rd (4:16 pm local time). Sony handycam / 32 mm and 2x barlow 10 " f5 Newtonian stopped down to f13.5. Optical zoom at close to 10 x. Exposure 1/1000 sec 37 frames stacked in Registax3.

I have also a sequence using the Baader 'photographic' film at 1/3500 sec exposure but focus was off and it did not come out so well.

Best wishes and a Merry Christmas

AR720 today

Very nice Tyler, this 'spot' just keeps growing, now 9 earth diameters when I looked a few hours ago (UT 15 Jan 04:30). If I get chance to process my video I will post.

Sunspot AR735

Hello Paul,
A nice image and some some good detail showing through in the penumbra. What exposure setting do you image the sun at?

Imaging Jupiter

Posted By Mike Ashburn

Hello Mark,

I am not sure you need colour filters. White balance setting on the camera is important. One trick is to set the white balance manualy using the moon as reference (I am not sure if your camera has this option. Also you can play arround with colour balance in say Photo Shop or Gimp. eg this is your image processed in Gimp with some unsharp masking and colour balance. Stack lots of images to reduce noise.

I hope this helps

RegiStax Help.

Posted By Mike Ashburn

Hello Harold,

By using Virtualdub you could use the resize filter. Check 'expand frame and leterbox'. Set resize options to same size as original. Set new frame width and height to what you want. This will expand your original avi size with a border and allow the larger alignment box to clear the edges of the frame. I am not sure how Registax will treat the border but it may work.

A lot of messing around so it may be easier to scroll through the avi and uncheck (or with something like Virtualdub delete) the bad frames.

My first Uranus capture

Posted By Mike Ashburn

Hi Brad,

A good image for your set up. Have you checked out the ALPO Japan website there are quite a lot of Uranus images being posted there recently. There are not too many unguided Dob imagers. My set up similar, but I use a Sony handicam aimed down the eye piece. I have a ToUcam still in the box unused and an equatorial platform under construction. One day soon I will finish it. Mike Salway started out same as you and he's doing some nice work now with a DMK camera on equatorial platform. It would be nice to see your completed set of planets.
