October DSO List

Posted By Tom Koenigsfeld

Hey thanks for the great info!! I sometimes get out there and have no idea what to look at. I have the meade lx90 and the tours are not all that fun sometimes. Thanks for the work done!! I will be taking this list and using it at the next star party. T. J.

lx 200 and lx 90 mount case or bag?

Posted By Tom Koenigsfeld

Well, I did end up finding scopetronix has a bag that is specifically made for these mounts. Sears has a large toolbox that might work too. This is just an update to the question i asked a while ago. Apparently everybody here throws them in the back of the car or uses a regular cardboard box. Tom

One born every minute

I agree with some things, but lately i have been doing great fulfilling my astro needs between "there" and here. Where else can you pick up a brand new meade variablizing eyepiece for 12.00 brand new? I had somebody offer one here when i put a want ad up and trying to get around 40 or so. Just purchased 2 laser pointers for 150 dollars total too. And when compared to my "specialty" store purchase, they charged me around 210 for one and the pair perform better. So in closing, some things are way over, some arent. There are people out there like my dad who pays whatever and money has no meaning. Then there are people out there like me that will sort all over the place to save a few dollars. Just keep checking around and never get in a hurry, that is my way of doing things. T. J.

meade $99 ep same quality as celes $99 ep?

Posted By Tom Koenigsfeld

Your best bet is to try one set, then try another in the same night. This is basically an opiniated question that usually leads to flame wars. Since you are getting both, you can get first hand experience and you can then answer you own question. Its like saying Fords are great and is chevy in the same quality level? Depending on your own personal experience. Both will get you where you want to go. You be the judge. T. J.

How do you figure resale value?

Posted By Tom Koenigsfeld

The way i see it, if you buy new, your always going to lose- unless its something that is hard to come by. The price of the lx90 has dropped from meade too which will always make the used price plummet. Like buying a new car, you pay x amount of dollars, drive it a bit, then sell, figure a huge amount of money wasted. If you can buy the same thing new for a little more than what people are asking for used, then common sence tells you to buy new, right? As for a formula, not sure. Probaly get around 60% of the money invested. Whats really bad is the people that are buying the meade 4000 series for retail for around 80.00 or so and they are selling here for around half or less. Just my simple observations- and opinions. T. J.

Transporting SCT

Posted By Tom Koenigsfeld

I have a lx 90 and i use this black mechanics tool box which has wheels on one side and locks (plastic). I used the foam inserts from the shipping box and cut them down to fit. The scope is very protected and total invested: $16.00 I purchased it at walmart here in iowa. The yahoo lx 90 group has pics ect. which shows what it looks like. I keep it in the storage until im going to use it, then wheel it out to the truck. Even has handles. The reason i dont use factory boxes is because they are cardboard and here in iowa, dew and moisture is always a problem and the factory boxes always seem to be wrecked and by the end of the season. I purchased a jmi storage bag here on astromart for the mount and a storage box that seems to look exactly like the meade eyepiece storage container with the foam inserts from walmart also. Keeps everything well protected and ready to go when i need a quick grab n go. Good luck. T. J.

Optics Of the LX90

Posted By Tom Koenigsfeld

I have had the lx90 for quite some time now and love it. I dont think i will be needing another scope for a very long time. It keeps impressing me over and over again. Just 2 fridays ago, i was viewing jupiter and seen a moon shadow on it for the first time. I know you can see this in other scopes too, but w/ the autostar and center on goto, in my opinion you cant go wrong. I know i love it. Good luck, Tom

Lunar twilight?

Posted By Tom Koenigsfeld

I know in my experience, you can definately tell the difference in the color of the sky when the moon is rising, (but below the horizon). It can be ignored at first, but will get brighter and brighter. It will start are kind of an orangish tint then as the moon rises, there goes your dark skys. It is a lot dimmer than the sun of course, but nonetheless, you will be able to tell where and when the moon will be rising, (not that it changes). Tom
