Comet Watching

Posted By David Brokofsky

Hi all,

With all the commotion over 17p/Hlolmes, I was wondering if anyone has had a look at any additional comets over the last week or so? I hear that C/2007 F1 Loneos is pretty bright assuming one can catch it before it sets shortly after sunset. I haven't had a look as the W. horizon from where I'm at is pretty cluttered. Anyone else?

CCD Building question

Posted By David Brokofsky

Hi all,

I'm not sure if this is the proper forum for this but I thought I would give it a shot anyhow. I got the wild idea to attempt building my own CCD imager for deep sky since buying one seems to be a bit out o my price range. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on where to start (i.e. design options, advice.....)?. Since I'm a beginner at the REAL technical stuff, the simpler the better.

Thanks.

17P/Holmes

Posted By David Brokofsky

Hi all, I haven't been out much due to the the cold and the clouds but I did manage to make it out last night and have a look at Comet Holmes. What a change from just a few weeks ago! It's much fainter but also much larger.
After having a brief look at Holmes, I turn the inos toward the are where 8P/tuttle is at now. This comet shows some promise for the next month or so as it's supposed to brighten quite a bit. Any one see it yet?

Any Observations?

Posted By David Brokofsky

Hi all, it's been awhile since I've been able to get out under the stars but I thought I'd ask if anyone else has been out to do any comet watching as of late?

Last I know Holmes was pretty big and getting dimmer but also Comet 8P/Tutle was visible in Ursa Minor. Has anyone had a look at this comet?

Merry Christmas

Posted By David Brokofsky

HI all,

I just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Skies here are clear for the first part of the night and Christmas night finds me on my back patio having a look at the current, brightest comets. How bout' the rest of you? Anyone else doing any comet watching tonight? Let me know what you see. I'll be positing my observations as soon as I'm done.

Cheers

Tuttle Observations?

Posted By David Brokofsky

HI all,

Finally I managed to get out the last 2 nights to look for comet Tuttle. Last night the weather was less than good so observations of the comet were bad at best. Tonight though the skies are pristine and so I got a good glimpse of Tuttle.

As far as detail I couldn't see a whole lot as the comet was already getting a bi lower in the SW. Over all I would say the comet was a bit dim with a moderate amount of brightening towards the core. No color was noted and I couldn't make out any real tail. Over all size would say the comet is a little bigger than M42. Although the size could be due to the comets location in the sky tonight.

Sorry to take some long to finally get a report out but when ever I PLAN to get out, it clouds up. I think you all know what I'm talking about there grin

Any new observations?

Posted By David Brokofsky

Hi all,

It's actually been awhile since I've been out to do any comet watching but I was curious if anyone else might have been able to get out.

From mid northern latitudes, several different comets are currently visible. At present the brightest are:

46P/Wirtanen
C/2007 T1
29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann

Any had a chance to look at any of these. these?

Comet Watching

Posted By David Brokofsky

Hi all,

I know that technically this is a topic for the AL Certification Board but I thought since it applies to Comet Watching, it would be OK here too.

Is anyone in the process of working on their Comet Watchers Certificate? I've been working on mine for about 3 years now. It's amazing too me just how active the sky really is. To think that there are as many comets visible at one time as there usually is. To me it's wonderful. So is or ha anyone worked on this certificate?

Opinions?

Posted By David Brokofsky

So what is everyone's opinion here, is it better to observe galaxies (not find them but actually observe them) with a low power, wide field or is it better to bump up the power?

I've heard both ways on this but I'm curious what everyone else thinks.

Cheers

Please post a pic of your accessory case

Posted By David Brokofsky

This is an older configuration I once had in my accessory case. Do to better equipment and what not, I changed my layout but this is what my crowded little box (or big box) used to look like.
