lx200 cradle ideas??

Posted By glenn littledale

hi folks,
i will soon have sitting in front of me a set of 12" lx200 fork arms and drive base. i want to build a cradle for it to mount a couple of small ota's. before i reinvent the wheel, i wonder if anyone out there has done this and has any suggestions.
thanks,
glenn

12" lx200 forks

Posted By glenn littledale

if i remove the spacer blocks between the fork arm and base, will the spacing be correct for a 10" tube?
thanks,
glenn

building a rumak ota??

Posted By glenn littledale

hi all,
i've been thinking about finding a 6" f/12 or so rumak optics set and building a tube for it. i don't know much about the design though and would like to find a good source on it. in addition to finding a source, one question i have right now is if i was willing to give up some focusing range, could i use an external focuser rather than a moving mirror focuser? the point of the exercise (aside from having fun) would be to build a vented corrector cell and install fan(s?) in the rear cell.
thanks,
glenn

refractor choice?

Posted By glenn littledale

hi all,
after living previously with a 5" f/12 d+g, i am considering a new refractor, but perhaps a somewhat shorter one. it's a case of 5" or bust. i'm done with expensive 3" and 4"refractors, wonderful as they are. my price point includes meade's old 127ed or possibly i could stretch for an orion 120ed. the longer focal length of the meade is attractive, but i don't know how color correction compares on these scopes. i'd love to see some spot diagrams for these, but i guess they probably are not out there.

i'd appreciate any thoughts.
thanks,
glenn
another possibility might be a 6" rumak, but that's another story.

mid size gem??

Posted By glenn littledale

hi all,
i am thinking about going to a gem for my 127mm f/9 refractor. weighs about 20 lbs. scope is primarily for visual use. it will be on a tripod for a while, but i see a pier in the future. do i go the old school route - find a gp-dx or the like, or maybe go for an orion sirius eq-g or maybe an older gm-8? i had an ap-706 once which was a dream, but a bit overkill for this scope. push to is just fine. i'm mostly after tracking (although high speed slewing with the eq-g would reduce fussing with clutches - an attractive thought). the thing i don't care for is flaky electronics, which usually seems to mean flaky connections. reliability is all. thanks for your thoughts.

sct counterweight removal

Posted By glenn littledale

hi all,
i have an older 12" meade sct apart. it's going on a gem so i thought some weight reduction would be in order. the counterweight in the bottom of the tube seems to be potted in a soft white caulk-like adhesive. i saw the link on removal for a 7" mak (http://www.astromart.com/articles/article.asp?article_id=658) but lacking fan holes in this scope, i thought i would drill through the rear cell, punch out the weight (probably easier said than done, but the adhesive doesn't look too tough)and then plug the hole. are there any better ideas floating around out there? i'd also like to separate the tube from the cells. any slick tricks to unglue these things?
thanks,
glenn

temma question

Posted By glenn littledale

hi all,
we are using an em-11 temma mount and have been operating it with a pc running the latest version of the skyx serious edition. it only works if we have the scope on the west side and synch to an object in the east. if we have the scope on the east side and synch to an object in the west the mount gets lost on the first slew and runs until we stop it. anybody have any ideas? (aside from just synching to objects in the west?)
thanks,
glenn

Advice: Before I take the pluck

Posted By glenn littledale

i prefer not to pluck. i push the foam down in the outline of the eyepiece. everything stays in place and is easy to rearrange if necessary.

What type of tripod/tracking mount Maxscope 40?

Posted By glenn littledale

how about a tak sky patrol II. certainly an expensive option, but it sure would be light and cute. i'm saving my pennies for one.
