Pointing accuracy: Titan vs AP1200 or Paramount

Posted By francois regembal

Hello Group,
I have been using a Losmandy Titan mount with joy for the past year. But when it comes to very precise pointing, it's been a frustrating experience. Indeed, I am imaging with a C14 at F11 with a ST2k, so I need a pointing accuracy better than 4 arcmin to get my target on the chip after a slew. I found out that the Titan just does not deliver that level of accuracy even after a lenghty alignment procedure with many many stars and a very good polar alignment etc.
I am looking at purchasing a better yet still portable mount to replace my Titan.
The AP1200 is very tempting but will it achieve this critical and demanding pointing accuracy???
How about the Paramount, is it portable??? (BTW I consider the Titan as highly portable).
Any other excellent portable mount in the same price range, that would talk to the Software Bisque family of software??? I'm thinking of the Takahashi EM400 or EM500 but I understand there are some compatibility issues between the mounts and those software...
Thanks for all your advices and help with this!

Motorized focusing?

Posted By francois regembal

Hello,
I am imaging through a William Optics Megrez 80ED and a C14 with a Feathertouch Crayford focuser mounted.
I am struggling to find out which is the most versatile solution for my motorized focusing.
Do I need two JMI motofocus? Do I need the expensive Robofocus with two motors?
Can someone help me make sense of the various options?
Thanks!!!
Francois

New SBIG CCD cameras coming soon???

Posted By francois regembal

Hi group,
I own an SBIG ST2000XM and I am looking at upgrading to an ST10XME. However, before I make the plunge (into my bank account), I am wondering whether SBIG will be releasing soon some new cameras with improved chips and lower prices...
Do you have any idea?
Thanks!

Deep, deep sky catalog?

Posted By francois regembal

Hi,
I have been observing deep sky targets for the past 25+ years thru a variety of scopes and more recently thru a 16" Meade Starfinder and then a C14. I have logged over 3,000 deep sky objects and I have observed basically all that is included in the "Night's Sky Observer's Guide" (vol 1 & 2).
I recently have purchased a used 20" Starmaster Dob which is an incredible performer and I would like to continue exploring the deep sky deeper than ever!
The issue I'm facing is that I am lacking a resource that would assist me in preparing the night's observation at these depths. I have the Hickson Group and Abell Planetary Observing Guides of Alvin Huey but I am looking for something more exhaustive. Since my log is an Excel spreadsheet, I would love to find out there a software that could interact with Excel and sort out data...
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Scopebuggy or JMI Wheeleybar?

Posted By francois regembal

I am looking for the best practical way to roll my G11 loaded with a C11 OTA out on my driveway. I will need to level so the added levelling screws on these models are an advantage over the Scoperoller solution is a definite plus. Also, I need the added rigidity offered by such levelling screws because I will be doing astrophotography.
I hesitate between the Scopebuggy and the Wheeleybar from JMI.
Any advice?

Thanks!
