Hi All,

Been reading your posts here with great interest, taking notes etc. Anyway, last night I captured M3 through a hole in the local clouds. Transparency was maybe 4/5 overall. First attempt at this Globular. Comments, suggestions welcome!

Cheers,
Phil

A Slightly Different Kind of Astropic?

Posted By Phillip Ostroff

Technically it has the Moon in it, so... :-)

Thought I would share this. I took this shot last week while in Jaffa, Israel. Taken at sunset, it shows the main port buildings of Jaffa with a nice crescent Moon and an Israeli Air Force C-130 Hercules on a patrol run.

Shot was taken with my Nikon D40.

Cheers,
Phil

DFK 21AU04 as a Guider????

Posted By Phillip Ostroff

Hi There,

Does anyone know if you can use a DFK 21AU04 camera (from the Imaging Source folks) as a guider? I'm curious about these (want to step up from a SPC900NC for lunar & planetary imaging) and it would be awesome if I could use this as a guider too!

Cheers,
Phil

Anyone have thoughts on using an SV Aplanat for AP? I have a DSLR and considering buying one for AP (for use on my CGEM)

DSI-C Intereference?

Posted By Phillip Ostroff

Hello,

I purchased a DSI for guiding a while back. I hooked it up to my laptop last night, and it looked rather unclear - static, almost like a TV signal gone wrong. This made it pretty hard to focus on stars etc. Just a very static~y image.

Any ideas what might be causing this? Could it be the cable?

Cheers,
Phil

The Good, The Bad, and THE UGLY

Posted By Phillip Ostroff

I bought the 21mm Stratus a couple of months ago, for use with my Meade LX200 8' F6.3 SCT. The views through it have been really fantastic, and my poor set of Meade Plossls don't get much light anymore as a result. Images seem sharp to the edge, although I do notice a little bit of flaring on occasion. The Orion Nebula is astounding in this eyepiece, as is M38. I just purchased the 13mm Stratus but due to exams and cloudy nights it hasn't seen much use. However I must say I looked at the moon with it last week (74% gibbous) and it was delightful. Filled the eyepiece FOV and presented a very clear, sharp image. I will most likely get the entire set over time.

Powr Supply

Posted By Phillip Ostroff

I built my own power supply using a 12 volt 75AH marine deep cycle battery, and have never looked back. I had a ton of issues powering my LX200 Classic SCT scope using a cheapish 12volt 7AH battery pack. Thanks to some advice on these boards and a couple of local astrobuddies, this turned out to be the right solution.

I went to Kmart for everything, including the battery mentioned above, a marine battery box to place it in, a power switch and some cigarette lighter jacks. Total cost around $80.00. I figure it lasts around 36 hours between charges, and the scope just loves it!

The Moon Through a Dob

Posted By Phillip Ostroff

I guess astromart limits the image size. The one I have is 1704*2272 pixels and it looks much better. Oh well.

The Moon Through a Dob

Okay, maybe this will be a bit more impresive. Same shot at the resolution I used to take the photo, just trimmed/cropped. Again, through a 6" dob and handheld digicam.

Dead LPI?

Posted By Phillip Ostroff

Found the problem, in case anyone else was interested or experienced the same issue. it was a faulty cable between the imager and the PC. Replaced it with a $5.00 cable on Ebay. All good now.
