Lagoon

Hi,
We had an OK night in NC last week, enough to get some pictures. Takahashi epsilon 160 (f/3.3) on G11 mount, manually guided, and Canon 20Da set at ISO 1600. No wind, quite humid, temperature 63F. The noise level in that camera is extremely low, which is very nice. I didn't see the red donught to the bottom right corner I usually get... The picture is a stack of 16 individual 3 minutes frames. All processing done in Photoshop CS (darks, contrast, curves, mask to bring out the faint nebula only, increased saturation a little) as I don't have ImagePlus yet to calibrate and stack correctly (flat field in particular). Thanks for looking

Butterfly nebula

Posted By Jean-Denis Douvier

The sky was horrible this week-end, transparency awful (1 hour "clear" out of 5) in North Carolina. I got only 6 and 5 frames for this 2 pictures mosaic of the Butterfly nebula in Cygnus.
Canon 20Da, ISO 1600, 3 minutes frames. Losmandy G-11, Takahashi Epsilon E160 f/3.3, manually guided. Calibrated, aligned and stacked with ImagePlus, processed with Photoshop.
Thanks for looking.

M33

Posted By Jean-Denis Douvier

Here is M33 taken last Friday 10/13 from the Blue Ridge Parkway, NC. Clear sky, wind, and cold (34F).
Canon 20Da at ISO 1600, Takahashi E160 f/3.3. 20 frames 3 minutes each for a total of 1 hour were calibrated, aligned and stacked with ImagePlus. Result was enhanced (screen mask, blacks and whites, noise enhancement, SMI technique, high pass filter, saturation increased) with Photoshop.

I read a few times that it's better to be at ISO 800 than at ISO 1600 - better tonal range. Is it really the case, I mean, do you actually see a difference on the final picture between ISO 800 and ISO 1600, assuming everything else is the same ?

IC 1396

Posted By Jean-Denis Douvier

A mosaic of 2 pictures for IC 1396 in Cepheus. It was taken last Friday 10/20 on the Blue Ridge Parkway (NC), clear sky, good transparency, fair seeing because of wind, 36F.
Canon 20Da, ISO 1600. Takahashi E160 f/3.3. 2 x (16 x 3 min = 48 min) of exposition, frames calibrated, aligned and stacked with ImagePlus, enhanced with Photoshop.

Calibration with flat fields seems very sensitive. After stretching, the upper left part has a green-yellow cast (that I find again on other pictures), the lower part has a blue-purple cast. I need to rework on the picture, take other flats to see if I can improve the result.
Thanks for looking.

Frames calibrated, aligned and stacked with ImagePlus, enhanced with Photoshop CS.

Orion

Posted By Jean-Denis Douvier

Same day (11/24), same place (Blue Ridge Parkway), I wanted so badly to get the first Orion of the season, so I took 16 x 3min = 48min pics with 9 x 20sec and 9 x 5sec for the core. Canon 20Da ISO 1600, Takahashi epsilon 160. Calibrated, aligned, stacked with ImagePlus, enhanced with Photoshop.

Horsehead and Flame nebulae

Posted By Jean-Denis Douvier

Hi,
I took this picture last Thursday from the Blue Ridge Parkway, next to Ivan. I took 20 frames of 3 minutes each for a total of 1 hour of exposure with the Canon 20Da at ISO 1600. I have the Takahashi epsilon 160 at f/3.3 (it helps).
Frames were calibrated, aligned and stacked with ImagePlus, then I enhanced the picture with Photoshop to increase contrast, smooth out the nebula and get rid of the noise as much as possible.

Orion Constellation

Posted By Jean-Denis Douvier

From Friday evening, on the Blue Ridge, next to Ivan, enduring a 16F night (we're not used to that in NC!).

Canon 20Da at 1600 ISO with Canon 17-40mm L f/4 lens at 40mm. Stack of 15 frames of 3 minutes each with ImagePlus, enhanced with Photoshop.
