Balanced Budget Amendment

This gets talked about every few years but nothing ever happens. I'm all for an amendment that prohibits the Feds from spending more money than they take in. Many states have this as part of their constitution. At some point "we the people" have to make our representatives stop this behavior. It's easy to be cynical and say it will never happen but I think after watching what's happened in the last few weeks it must.

Any thoughts?

Solar variability and global warming

I was looking through some recent issues of Physics Today online and came across a piece in the March 2008 issue detailing the link between the Sun and global warming. The authors estimate that the Sun's variability "could account for as much as 69% of the increase Earth's average temperature". It is an interesting piece. You need a subscription to read the original piece but you can read the letters to Physics Today about the it and the authors responce to those letters.

Difference between a Liberal and a Progressive

I read this a while back but can't find where I did anymore. It said:

Liberal: Will disagree with what a conservative says but will fight for his right to say it.

Progressive: Will disagree with conservatives and use any means necessary to shut them up.

Must be why I have so many liberal friends.

Neighborhood Star Party 10-12-08

I had a mini star party for my neighbors and their children tonight. This time of year is great for that because it's not to cold and it gets dark relatively early. I had 9 kids all ranging in age from 5 to 7, except for on 12 year old, and 7 adults. We looked at Jupiter, Neptune, Alberio, M11, and M57. Jupiter and M11 got the most oohs and ahhs. The youngest was having a little trouble looking through. I wasn't sure she was actually seeing something until I asked her what colors she saw when we looked at Alberio. When she said blue and yellow, I thought cool.

One other thing I thought was neat was I had a little discussion with the kids before we started about to look through the scope and not hold the eye piece. Not one of the kids did it wrong. It was a fun night.
