Which Barlow?

Posted By Tim LeVane

Which Barlow would you recommend for smaller Newtonian scopes in the 4 to 6 inch range and why?

Small apo or large achro?

Posted By Tim LeVane

My frist scopes where a 6 inch Eq mounted newt and an 8 inch dob that picked up on astromart. The 8 inch was just too big for me to lug around. I wasnt impressed by the 8 inch dob at all. The 6 was ok And I have thought about getting another one some day. I have thought about a good sct 8.
I love the pronto for a few reasons, its easy to set up like under 5 min from its case to outside and viewing. I like wide sweeping views of the sky. My dream scope would be anyone of the 102 to 127mm apo's out there. But thats just not going to happen for the next 4 or 5 years.

Small apo or large achro?

Posted By Tim LeVane

I decided to post a few facts about myself. I am 45, an artist with mild ADHD (I like to do things fast, get bored easy)I have a few minor ailments, Migranes from a the cervical fusion surgery I had 3 years ago. The simpler something is to use The better I enjoy it. Most of my viewing tends to be in small doses say 15 min to 45 max. If I am going to be stargazing longer than that Its going to be just laying down on a blanket looking up at the heavens.
sometimes I will read about a star or messier object and go look for it, but most nights it just goingto be scaning the sky at random. I do enjoy the moon quite a bit as well.

Vixen ED80SF on Portamount

Posted By Tim LeVane

I have this combo and I think its a great scope. I used it next to my old 102 orion mak and found the vixen had overall better views. The porta mount is easy to use but I would not call it a lightweight mount. Its a tad bit heavy for a portable mount. Nothing major, mind you I can pick it up easy with scope and walk from my basement upstairs and outside really easy. For airline portablity the WO might be better. The only real fault I find with the mount is the leg spreaders are made from plastic.

Aperture, aperture, 80mm?

Posted By Tim LeVane

I am fairly new to telescope astronomy, having used scopes now for just over a year. I was a pure visual stargazer for years, a short stint with binos then back to eyes.

I started with an 8 dob and a 6 Eq mounted hardin Newt, then moved to a 102mm Orion mak on a camera tripod. Next came a Tele vue Pronto.

All had good and bad points, I found that the pronto was the scope I used most often and recived the most joy from. Its only fault was its size ( too small)!.

So moving up to an 80mm Ed scope as a main scope has been the perfect choice for me. Easy to set up,affordable, and great views of wide swaths of sky.

I do plan on picking up another scope or two and am currently looking for a smaller Newt and later a nice 4 inch apo for planets.

shaking sound from 100mm ed ota

Posted By Tim LeVane

Itz, it seems that your scope is cursed, many bad things will happen to you till it is cleansed. The good news is I can help, I know an anceint rite that really works, if you send me the scope I should have it uncursed in 3 to 4 months.... 8)

It sounds like the lens cell might be a little lose, which may or may not be a bad thing. are you hearing a tiny noise or is thier a lot of shaking or vibrating? also give Orion a call monday they have a great service dept.
