Packing a large Mirror for shipment

Posted By Kerry Green

I seem to recall running across a site moths ago regarding shipping a large mirror. I cannot locate it anymore and was wondering if anyone has tips for shipping my 16" mirror for refiguring and recoating. Help is greatly appreciated.

Spectrohelioscope

Okay, so I've read Fred Veio's book and am interested in building a SHS. I am curious if anyone out there has either built, used, or otherwise seen one. There does not seem to be a lot of resources out there. I'm trying to decide if it will be worth it to bould one or just say, "forget it" and buy a PST.

Pleiades Last Night

Posted By Kerry Green

I started my astro-imaging session last evening at 9:30 intending to get some data of M-33. Unfortunately I had a heck of a time using my new autoguider (couldn't get the darn thing calibrated). By the time my calibration and setup was complete, M33 was too high to be comfortable to find, therefore, I tried M45 which I have done before, but not using the autoguiding. Total exposure is about 90min. My laptop batteries died before I got all of the data I wanted. No flats (wish I had them though). Hope to get more data tonight. So here it is: my first autoguided image!

WO ZS II ED 80mm, 0.8x flattener
Losmandy GM-8
Canon 30d
ISO 800, 3min subs
Orion Starshoot autoguider

Looks pretty good. I can tell there is still a lot of "hidden data" there. you might try to process it further. The detail is there, you just need to coax it out!!

What Do Amateurs Do For a Living?

I haven't read all of the replies yet, but I'll add my own:

I work for a company called EaglePicher Technologies. We build spacecraft and satellite batteries. Specifically, I run test regimes, set up the test equipment, maintain and troubleshoot test equipment, generate data, analyze the data and make recommendations. We are getting ready to build new batteries for the Hubble Space Telescope now (since our batteries that are up there now are 19 years old)and have built the batteries that power DAWN, AIM, SWIFT, Spitzer, all of Dish and Directv, Iridium, and the list can go on forever...

EDIT: Oh yeah!!! we also build cells for the ISS too. We don't get to package the batteries, though.

Meade Lightbridge 16" dob.

Posted By Kerry Green

Hello Alvaro!

I can not vouch for the specific optics of this version of the 16" meade, although I just completed a homebuilt obsession style scope that uses Meade optics. Going from an 8" to a 16" showed a huge difference at the eyepiece. I can only go off of pictures, but it looks like a reasonable telescope. I can see where they may have cut corners to save $$$ (crushed truss tubes and what not), but I am sure you would not be disappointed, and $2000 is pretty reasonable for large optics. You could always build your own scope around them later!!

Apogee 20X100 VS 25X100 Which?

Posted By Kerry Green

Hi Roger,

I would choose the 20X100 because they would be much easier to hold steady and give slightly wider fields.

Upper Cage Lining

Hi Taylor!

I just finished my 16" truss scope and have a ton of Kydex leftover. I purchased it locally from a plastics shop in a 4'x8' roll. Can't recall how much it cost now. I had no problems using it and really like the looks. If you want, I can probably sell you some of my scraps cheap. Let me know how much you need and I will see if I can accommodate your needs.

So is no one on this forum going to be at this star party? I figured I might find at least one or two.

Lunar Eclipse from Ann Arbor, Michigan

Doug,

I really like how your pics capture the blue rim beyond the shadow just before totality. This was something I observed visually with my 20x80 binos, truly awesome! Unfortunately, I was unable to capture this with my camera.
