Attempting to take my first pic of the moon, advice?

Posted By Casey Whalen

I just got my Orion 12" dob a month or so ago and plan on trying to take a picture of the moon tonight but I've never attempted this and need some pointers on what settings to have my Nikon D70 camera on? I have the ring and t-mount to hook the camera directly to the rack/pinion I have a intelliscope so I'm hoping I won't have a problem adjusting for the extra weight via the tensioning knob. I plan on of course using a moon filter but what settings should I have the camera on? I know I can only expose the image for a few seconds, can any one help me out?

Thanks!

Need advice on a nice wide angle ep.

Posted By Casey Whalen

Hello,

I have my orion 12" dob and have a set of plossls. I would like to purchase a nice 2" wide angle ep but nothing too spendy, somewhere in the $100 range would be great also what size ep would you recommend for general viewing? Also I've been trying to checkout Jupiter with a 9mm UO ep and it isn't terrible but I'm having trouble bringing out clarity of the planet its quite blurry. I realize this could be many things, light polution, darkness, heat in the atmosphere but I was looking at around 11pm and it was reasonably dark would upgrading to a nice planetary ep help much?

Thanks!

2" UO 25mm MK-70 eyepiece in my 12" dob?

Posted By Casey Whalen

I'm trying to buy a nice 2" eyepiece to go with my 12" orion dob (f/5). I'm just wondering if the 2" UO 25mm Mk-70 eyepiece would be a good fit or not? Is my scope to fast for this eyepiece? If not would the 2" UO 32mm MK-80 be a good match? I'm also wondering if the above eyepieces are not a real good match what are my options? I don't really have the money for Tele Vue any other alternatives?

Thanks!

Is this an optimal eyepiece for my 12" dob?

Posted By Casey Whalen

I'm starting to build up my 2" eyepieces and have heard great things about the Tele Vue 12mm Nagler Type 4. Would this be a good choice for my 12" dob? I just want to make sure before I invest in this particular eyepiece. Can I get some advice on a low powered eyepiece? I'm thinking about getting a 27mm panoptic, maybe something bigger (i.e. 27mm and up)?

Thanks all for the great info as always!

A 2" eyepiece?

Posted By Casey Whalen

Thanks for all the good info thus far. So what is a 2x barlow? Is it something that attaches to the eyepieces?

Which 2" wide field to use with my new xt12i?

Posted By Casey Whalen

I'm looking at getting the TeleVue 35mm Panoptic. If I can find one for around $300. This would be a good combo with my xt12i correct? No abjuration, crisp clean image?

Which 2" wide field to use with my new xt12i?

Posted By Casey Whalen

Ok, so i've narrowed down my ep. Now I'm debating on either going the 35mm Tele Vue Panoptic route or a higher power 27mm Tele Vue Panoptic. After reading up on this in the Backyard Astronomers Guide he recommends the 27mm because it's more of a middle of the road ep. Anyone have any suggestions? Also I have bought a 1.25" ep celestron ep kit so I have ep ranging from 3mm or so to 32mm.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

27 televue through a barlow?

Posted By Casey Whalen

Would this be a good match with my xt12i? I plan on buying these 2 eyepieces:

Tele Vue 27mm panoptic 2"
TeleVue 13mm Nagler Type 6 (used on AM for $240)

Since i'm on a budget I can only afford to ep's. Would I be smarter by going with a ep less than 13mm to go with the 27mm?

Thanks.

So what is a radian ep, what does it do? Just a different style ep like panoptic, made differently?

General eyepiece selection?

Posted By Casey Whalen

I've narrowed down my ep to one of the following:

TV 14mm Radian $250.00 Afov 60 degrees Focal Length: 14 Eye Relief: 20
TV 15mm Panoptic $215.00 Afov 68 degress Focal Length: 15 Eye Relief: 10

I'm leaning towards the Radian. Any suggestions?
