New Constellation Images

Posted By Todd Leen

Folks,

Finally scanned some 35mm negatives from February.

http://www.cse.ogi.edu/~tleen/astro/CanisMajor.html

Curiously, the (used) #3 fog filter I used in these generated
a strong flare along a particular direction -- something
not apparent when I look through the filter.

The mouseover commands are a rip-off from Jerry Lodriguss'
site and book. Thanks Jerry.

Cheers

Hybrid shot of M45

Posted By Todd Leen

Folks,

Luminance from CCD -- 3x10min, ST-2000XM, Takahashi Sky-90 @ f/4.5
Color from Provia 400 slides, 2x1hour, Takahashi Sky-90 @ f/4.5

http://www.cse.ogi.edu/~tleen/astro/M45Hybrid.html

Given some weather, I'll go after more luminance data.

Comments / suggestions welcome.

Current color films

Posted By Todd Leen

Folks,

I've not done any astrophotography in several years, and want to get back to it. At the time, the most widely used film for deep sky subjects was Kodak E-200 (or Elite-Chrome 200) slide film. What's the story today?

Thanks
Todd

Classifieds Archive

Posted By Todd Leen

Folks,

I've been away from astronomy (and Astromart) for several years, and am getting back to it now. Astromart used to keep an archive of expired ads that one could browse. This was useful see what market value of an item has been. I don't see the archives anywhere --- are they still available?

Thanks
Todd

4X5 View Camera Photos

Posted By Todd Leen

I'd love to know too. Several days ago I started
to look at films, but didn't find E200
in 4x5. I have a friend who shot some hypered
4x5 Tech Pan film at an observatory years back.

The lenses aren't fast, and if you have to stop
them down 1-2 stops to get good images at the
edges, that would be a show-stopper.

Anyone with experience out there? I'd try
in a second if E200 was available -- imagine 16x20
prints as crisp as a 4x6 from 35mm?

Any success with field de-rotators?

Posted By Todd Leen

Al,

Jason Ware used to do film work with a
16" LX200 mounted alt/azimuth, and a
field de-rotator. Check out his page

http://galaxyphoto.com/equip.html

He can probably help you with details.

Autoguiders

Posted By Todd Leen

Michael,

The ST-4 is available pretty frequently on Astromart;
prices vary from $350 to $650. SBIG provides excellent
service and advice, even if you're buying used.

I own an STV (bought used), and it works like a dream. The
video display and advanced features are helpful for drift aligning your mount, for centering objects too dim to see through the camera eyepiece, and for focusing the autoguider. The STV also comes up pretty frequently on
the used market. You can get one, with the e-Finder
attachment (forms a stand-alone guidescope for low
focal length optics) for $1700-$1900.

Good luck.

Speed/Film Combinations for Lunar Shots

Posted By Todd Leen

Hi Saul,

Michael Covington's book
Astrophotography for the Amateur
(http://www.covingtoninnovations.com/astro/)
gives reliable formulae for calculating
exposure of the moon at various phases.
The formalae worked for me. I'm sure they
will for you too.

Some more newbie questions

Posted By Todd Leen

Hi Chris,

That's a reasonable start! I don't know Olympus
lenses, but vignetting in a fast 50mm lens isn't
unheard of. The Olympus *could* be worse since
making the body small necessarily introduced some
compromise in coverage. Stop the lens down to f/4.

The pic looks a bit like my first piggy-back
attempts for which I used Fuji 800 X-tra.
Try Elite-Chrome 200 at 25-45min at f/4 from
a decent site.

The good news is you're suffiently well-aligned
avoid trailing.

Good luck!

E200?

Posted By Todd Leen

Robert,

The 35mm consumer film that I
like for astro is Elite Chrome 200.
The PROFESSIONAL version (what I'm
told is the same emulsion) is called
E-200.

Medium format rolls -- 120 or 220 -- are
only available in the professional emulsion,
i.e. as E-200.

Hope this clears things up. (Kodak's
"professional" emulsions are refrigerated
at the retailer. There may be other
differences that I'm unaware of. But the
advertised spectral sensitivities and
response [density vs exposure] for Elite-Chrome
and E-200 are, I'm told,the same].)
