Third Contact 11-21-17

Hi, Jim... Nice! That was JUST BEFORE I put my binoculars down! YEEEEIIIII!!! I especially liked the red "spicules" in a substantial arc just prior, and allowed just a few seconds before pulling the binos off my eyes. Tom

Artifacts with M45 and Canon 6D

Hi, Jacob. Those doughnuts look like the pupil of your scope way out of focus. Each one is coming from one bright star. The Palomar Schmidt images are loaded with those, in that case, light bouncing off the film, then off the flattish Schmidt Plate and back to the film... something like that. In your case... might be off a lens surface, camera window... Someone else may recognize this better. Richard Berry covers that stuff in his tome "Astronomical Image Processing." Tom

Thinking some more. If you count the pixels across the entire (little) doughnut, and multiply by the Pixel Pitch x F#... THAT is how far out of focus a bright star would be to create that. Sometimes the front-back bounce off a camera window can do that. OR even off the CCD chip, off the window and back. This is one reason CCD cams can be orederd without that little cover slip that is just forward of the chip. The general topic is "ghost images" and lotsa ways can get this. Depending, there may be not much to amend. Most often seen on BRIGHT stars. Tom

file size

On the flip-side, nearly all consumer ~devices~ now-a-days, WAY oversample images, Far beyond the resolution of the taking-optics. So, most of the size/xmit-bandwidth is vacuous. Binning % down until the 1:1 (now-unscaled) image just fills a laptop screen (around a megapix) near always displays, without any apparent loss of information. Taking the (little) time to do this, generally helps the appeal of ads. I think it's nice that Astromart accepts a LOT of images! Tom

Lunt 60 PT or Coronado 60 Solar question fior ya'l

Posted By Thomas Dey

I enjoyed the Lunt 60 PT for a couple of years. Venus Transit, and lotsa activity, when at Solar Max. Good views and images and user-friendly. Later got the 100mm, same good experience. Recall some comments regarding the ~new~ Coronado tuner feeling loose? Also comments regarding ghosting internal vs external etalon? Maybe someone else can describe. I imagine performance is comparable. Tom

Some faint galaxies around NGC507

Posted By Thomas Dey

Hi, Rolando, that's a Nice Field! I've been scanning that region lately with my 16-inch binos with Night Vision. Lots of Abell clusters, e.g. "NGC705 Yes! Many galaxies in a tight bunch!" Also the Corona, Hercules, Perseus clusters... I don't post much, for general lack of interest...? Maybe that's my fault. I just gota believe there MUST be a lot of people observing and/or imaging... or maybe NOT?! Sometimes reminds me of a local marina here... piles of fantastic boats just parked there, and hardly any out on the lake! Tom

Ha ha Ha HA HA Ha ha... Good grief, imagine if one had to WORK next to that guy! Reminds me of my years at Kodak. Good place, nice people... except for the obligatory few, with crummy attitude. The kind who internalize that, simply because they work at a big company... that their own poop don't ever stink. Tom, AMart friendly, Tom

picture 2 shows the binos easily roll out. This commercial (Amish) shed is perfect, and affordable! I ran electricity out, under ground. Very convenient!
