The Insurrection: A "Direct And Collateral Attack"

It is your nature to oversimplify to the point of ridiculousness.  In your world, there are two kinds of voters:  Vapid personality voters like the D women you slander and intelligent issues voters, like you.   I have the sophistication to understand that the juvenile binary choices you parlay are not reflective of any reasonably mature voter and his or her voting process, and I consider myself to be a reasonably mature voter.

Obviously, I am wasting my time here with you.  But I had some time to waste today.  Now, please answer whether or not I voted for Trump in 2016 because of his charming personality?  You are the dude who pigeon-holes.  Pigeon hole me.

Jim
I'm curious Rich, I know you won't answer honestly, but I'll ask anyway.  Along with the policy issues of importance to you, do you consider demeanor, leadership capability, integrity, executive effectiveness, maturity, competence and other traits when you consider whom to vote for?  Do you think about who is best for the country at that point in time?  Do you consider the overall political climate when making your decision?

I suppose you do not.  You vote for the against the "liberal" and for the "conservative" 100% of the time, no matter what, right?  You are not a persuadable voter.  That is OK.  At least 65% of the voters are not actually persuadable.  On the other hand, I suspect a lot of persuadable voters like me consider all sorts of legitimate leadership and political factors along with policy considerations.

In your charming way, you will see the consideration of legitimate leadership qualities or political factors as functionally the same as these allegedly vapid women, who in your fevered mind, voted for WJC because of his looks.  Nothing I can do about your penchant for oversimplification to the point of absurdity.  Jim

Hi Mel:

I think the pundit class and hyper-partisans are invested in the Russian hoax and the "insurrection."  I bet if you ask some normal Joe Democrats who might be your  friends or neighbors about it, they'll say that they don't think about it much.  They are much more worried about inflation, or other pocket-book issues, I'd bet.

A Satisfying Judicial Decision...

Hi Rod:

If I understand you correctly, you are totally missing the point.  A motion to dismiss is not anything like "their one draw of the cards."  The judge does not even consider any defenses at this point.   For a motion to dismiss, the judge is law bound to accept every allegation made by the plaintiff as true.  At trial, that is obviously not the case.  The jury gets to listen to both sides' evidence and decide for themselves what is true and what is not.

The only people who would refer to a defendant losing a motion to dismiss as a "key decision" are TV pundits.  (Winning a motion to dismiss would be a key decision of course, because it would decide the case.)  All we know right now is that the plaintiffs have alleged enough facts to support going to trial.  At this phase, the deck is stacked in favor of the plaintiff.

It takes a real crummy plaintiff's lawyer to lose a motion to dismiss, for example the clowns who brought lawsuits to overturn the election who presented no allegations of election fraud at all.  Dominion is not being represented by clowns.  They might have the best case of all time.  We just don't know at this stage and winning a motion to dismiss proves only that they got over the very low bar necessary to proceed.

It's actually continuing to unfold before you but you don't recognize it. The fact is the Trump team is working diligently to subvert the electoral process on multiple levels. Bannon and his co-horts reportedly provide scripts to angry Republican parents to read at school board meetings to create imaginary and incendiary issues on mask mandates/vaccine mandates and or CRT, even if the school district doesn't teach the latter. The Trump team is pushing candidates for election boards who either were at the insurrection at the capitol or are active in pushing the big lie. One of 'em just got elected. Another is running for the governorship of Arizona. Another, who just stated he wouldn't have certified the votes in Georgia for the 2020 election is also now running for its governorship. If these people and others like them actually get elected to office, and Trump runs for office and loses again in 2024, then it's likely his supporters on the election boards or in the governorships, will not certify the vote based upon the big lie of election fraud.  If that happens, Democracy ends. Do you not get that?
What with Rich telling me we're doomed as a nation because I voted for Biden and you telling me we are doomed as a nation because Trump and his cronies still draw breath...  Well, in view of all that, I think I'll have a beer!

The variable here that I don't understand and apparently the one in which Fox can still cling to for some sort of mitigation of the claim is the one of a "well known entity". My quick google search doesn't show me much of anything but I'm guessing its akin to a company generally known to the public wherein one can make derogatory comments about it without repercussions. For example, one might say a certain automaker makes crappy cars but the company can't sue you for saying it. In the case of Dominion, I doubt that it's a well known entity, at least up until the time that right wing media attacked it with bogus claims of election fraud. I recall Tucker stating words to the effect that "we know nothing about Dominion" or "we know nothing about Dominion voting machines". If my guess about what constitutes a "well known entity" is correct, then I hope the Dominion lawyers use Tucker's words against Fox...
All good points.  I don't have any idea or opinion about the relative strength of Fox or Dominion's case.  No one but the insiders really will have a legitimate idea, until the evidence starts to get presented in court.  My guess (guess) is that Dominion has a pretty strong case since I believe they have already settled with some defendants.  Jim

I know I agree with Rod more often than not and should call him out more when he gets like this, but you guys on the right are just as guilty of this when it comes to Rich. I'm planning on selling some astronomy gear this spring and it's the only reason I reupped to Astromart. If this place could be a little cooler and less toxic it would be a bonus, but unfortunately I don't see that happening with the divisions as they currently are. The little name calling in the responses are juvenile and unbecoming. Not that anyone cares, what with only six or seven folks regularly posting here. What a dead little corner of the internet this has become. Too bad some of the others who used to post here weren't chased off or didn't want to put up with all of the BS here.
Great post Jim.  The place has become unbearable.  I do hope that you, yours, and everyone who posts here had a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and will have a fine 2022.  Jim

Perhaps they should do away with the Politics forum altogether, and that way there will be maybe 10 new postings per day, along ALL of the forums throughout A-Mart in total.  wink
No, I am not part of the problem.  I treat everyone here, except you, with a lot of respect.  I always have.  This is not legitimately debatable.

So, I don't come here much anymore.  I do have a soft spot in my heart for the forum of the old days.  It was a lot of fun and you could learn a lot from the many different perspectives.  I still enjoy hearing what Jim, James, Gregg, Brian, Dave, Rod, Mel and others post on various topics.  I miss so many people who used to post a lot, most recently Russ.  Nowadays though, your venom here just make me tired.  I get it that Rod is pretty toxic at times too, and he does post a lot, but there is a qualitative difference between your posts and Rod's.  It is easy for anyone but you to see.  You will disagree of course, that is expected and predictable, I am way past caring.

Some times if I am in a bad mood I'll engage you.  But that exercise always leaves me feeling dirty and low.  So it goes.  I believe you have effectively and perhaps intentionally killed the forum, to feed some strange narcissistic impulse of your own that is completely beyond my comprehension.

You and I might get along fine in real life.  I would hope so.  But this medium brings out the worst in you.  Of course you will disagree and draw bogus equivalences.  Some things never change.

That said we pretty much agree on the NV thing.....I followed that stuff for a few months on CN and managed to get some time at the EP of 3 or 4 different NV setups over the last couple years. Decided it wasnt going to be my thing. I greatly prefer sticking with natural magnification......
Agreed - when I am showing people the brighter Messier Objects or just tooling around at the eyepiece myself, my favorite part might be the subtle natural star colors.

The left cares for the country and is well-meaning with heartfelt convictions similar to the right. I'm not talking about the lunatic fringe; both parties have their fair share of crazies, which is inevitable given our big-ten two-party system. I'm talking about the mainstream members of the parties. Any example you provide of leftists destroying our country, I can counter with a similar instance arguing that right-wingers are destroying our country. This tit-for-tat game of what-about-ism is pointless and has no logical end. Yet you never seem to tire of it.

And leftists do not hate the country merely because they recognize and want to change some of its faults. Don't conservatives also complain about the state of our country? Isn't that what you do all the time? In this very thread, no less? Does that mean you hate your country too?

I know none of this will make a difference and that you will merely continue to rant-and-rave about how evil and depraved the left is and that only the right is virtuous and faithful. It's sad since the nuances, complexities, and subtleties of life and politics are what truly make it enjoyable and worth engaging.
Amen.
