There are a number of states (about a dozen) where the .223 is not allowed for deer hunting. Many of the ones that do allow them also recommend you not use them for over 100 yards. There is a reason for that. Yes, it was chosen as a military round for a number of reasons. Not the least of which unless it hits a vital organ it is more likely to wound but not kill thus tying up personnel in dealing with the wounded. Another reason was infantry could carry more ammo of lighter weight and mass than the calibers used prior to its adoption. 

I personally would not hunt deer with a .22 caliber anything.....I dont want it running off to suffer and die without me finding it. Been hunting deer for 50+ years not for sport (although I do enjoy it) but to put meat on the table. While you can use it legally in most states and people do hunt with the .223 it is recommended for headshots and under 100 yards by most of them.

BTW, while the .223/5.56 is the most popular with the AR folks it definitely is not the only caliber the AR platform offers.....its popularity primarily comes from the ammo being cheap and plentiful.....

Regardless of what your newscaster said, whether AR-15-style rifles are appropriate for deer-hunting is moot. All we have to do to understand how lethal they are to *humans* is to look at any of the mass shootings in the recent past where they are the weapon of choice. No one is disputing this.....guns are deadly period. They are supposed to be. In fact that is the reason they exist. Hyperbole about a particular type of weapon doesnt change anything about that. I can assure you whether its from a 3 shot magazine in a bolt action hunting rifle or a 10 shot magazine in a semi-automatic NOTHING is different about the potential of the caliber used.  

A tired old saying but none the less still a fact. Guns do not kill outside of accidents, people do. People with a predilection for killing other people will simply find another way if they cant get a gun.....

Thats the problem Darian.....in general the left is ruled by emotion over logic......Some do eventually outgrow it and some never do.

The ten states with the highest death gun rates are all red states with highly lax gun laws. Illinois is not even in the top 25, and I point this out because Chicago and its gun violence problem keep coming up in the debate as evidence that gun laws don't work.

Here is a chart from the CDC and the year 2020, but dozens of studies and data sets like this say the same thing. States with more guns and laxer gun control laws have more gun violence.

There are plenty of stupid (well lets say ignorant) Congress critters to go around. The representative who covers the Stone Mtn area here whos name escapes me right now was sitting on some armed forces committee and questioning a General about upping the forces on the island of Guam by from 10k to 25k or something like that.....His biggest concern was that the island could capsize from the additional weight since the base is located on one side of the island. He happens to be a Democrat.....He tried to walk it back a couple days later by claiming he was making a joke....I saw the video which is probably still on youtube....he wasnt.
