Hi James: This conclusion is well supported by the figures. In this case, a picture is worth a thousand words. The graphs below shows the rate of infection (top) and hosptialization (bottom) among four groups during the Delta phase of the pandemic:
(A) People with no vaccination and no previous infection
(B) People with vaccination but no infection
(C) People with previous infection but no vax, and
(D) People with previous infection and vaccination
Obviously the Group A folks with no vax and no prior infection were at greatly elevated risk of infection and hospitalization than B-D. The B-D groups are very similar. This emphasizes the wisdom of getting the jab before any infection in my opinion. Getting Alpha to protect oneself from Delta was extremely risky at worst and unpleasant at the very best. I am sure we agree on the wisdom of vaccines.
This data does, in my opinion, need to be taken into account when considering certain public policies that so upset the right. Specifically:
1. I understand that one can not go clubbing in NYC without showing proof of vaccination. The airlines have at least toyed with this idea. I think a proof of vaccination policy is unnecessary in the age of omicron, since lots of vaccinated and previously infected people are getting omicron. But if one were to argue for that policy, they ought to be requiring proof of vaccination
or proof of previous infection.
2. Without discussing whether or not a
federal vax mandate is constitutional, any vax mandates (state or federal) should exclude those previously infected. Personally, I think the concept of a vaccine mandate dies with omicron. We do not mandate flu shots each year. People make their own choices even though it could be argued that mandating flu shots would save some lives on the margins. The pharmaceutical companies will no doubt have tailored the vaccines to be effective against omicron in a couple of months, but by then, nature will have taken its course. So, I am thinking that vax mandates are now obsolete. Curious if you, Rod, Dave etc. disagree, I can certainly appreciate the counter arguments. Jim
