Hi Rod:

I don't watch or listen to Tucker Carlson, Josh Hawley, Paul Gossar, and/or Marjorie Taylor Greene.   So I can't really comment on anything they say, write or tweet.  I never do.

Hi Dave:

I would much rather live in a world where people are free to disseminate disinformation than a world where the government censors disinformation.  This is true even if the disinformation is demonstrably false and damaging.  Government censorship of disinformation inexorably leads to government censorship of "disfavored" information and then unpopular opinions and the quashing of any dissent.  History is replete with examples, look to any dictatorship.

I hated the "some opinions are not worth reporting on or discussing" line of thought when the US press decided Trump required such special treatment.  Freedom is too precious to trust the gatekeeping of information to any allegedly benign authority.

What to do about disinformation?  (A) the authorities can publish better information, and (B) information consumers can weigh the competing viewpoints for themselves.  In the case of anti-vax disinformation, did this cost peoples lives?  In my opinion it did.  Free speech is worth the price.

p.s. Coyne attributes some bizzaro-beliefs to the occupiers.  That is stupid in my opinion.  This sort of painting the occupiers as misled buffoons is disinformation of its own sort.  The sort of elite condescension that created Trump oozes from Coyne's opinion piece.  For example, surely very few of the occupiers actually thought there were RFIDS in the vaccines.  On the other hand, I bet a lot of them, maybe all of them, think the government's handling of the pandemic in general was heavy handed, elitist, and worthy of dissent.  Jim

Last comment, The last bit of Coyne's opinion piece is one of the worst examples of us/them "othering" that I have read recently.  Well except for maybe some of Rod or Richard's posts.  He builds up a caricature of conservative people.  He then attributes to them the whacked-out beliefs of the lunatic fringe, then he, with a straight face, wonders how democracy can survive such a vicious and mindless onslaught from this hoard of "others."

Coyne ought to look in the mirror and reflect on how much pretentious snobbery like this article motivates those whom he despises.  I think his whole premise is shameful, even though I am pro-vax, fully vaccinated, fully boosted, and so on.  Jim

Seriously?  The last line is "How healthy can our democracy remain under this combined assault on reality."  That is a call to action.  He is a good writer so he left the last dot unconnected.  The reader can connect that dot for themselves.

If not acceptance of censorship, what action do you think Coyne is calling for?

They've been removed for violations of the law and not because of an impingement on free speech.
Fair enough, the anti-vaxxers have not been censored so far.  But in response to David, what the heck is Coyne calling for here if not censorship?  I doubt he is calling for the wholesale round-up and killing/incarceration of the vile spreaders of disinformation.

I too just re-read the article.  In my opinion he is trying to motivate his readers to support censorship.  He is calling on his chums in the government to make forays along the censorship lines.   The risk is just so dire in his stated opinion that censorship is justified.  Why the heck did he write this opinion piece if not as some sort of call to action?  He cloaks it in the language of a noble defense of "reality," but in my opinion, this is a call for censorship/power like few others.

Guys, I get it that Coyne is not openly calling for censorship.  My opinion of his motivation for writing this article is not changed however, I will try to explain.  Consider the bit below.  This sort of analysis (some ideas are simply not worth discussing or reporting) set me off because it has been used a lot recently in the US to justify censorship.  I can clip half a dozen of these, to emphasize my point.  I think he is calling for censorship, or the acceptance of censorship.  Heck, he even points out that Canada has no First Amendment?  Why did he do that?  Dave, you'll have to tell me, but is there any First-Amendment-like protection for free speech in Canada?

I generally agree that Covid was/is not a huge risk to children, but that 99% figure sure seems like it must be an exaggeration.

Hi Rod:

I'm not sure I understand your point.  I think that this sort of data showing the relative infrequency of Covid deaths among children might demonstrate that the school closures were (in retrospect,) not worth it.   Especially if we correlate this with increased suicides, the number of at risk-children who are simply slipping through the educational cracks because of remote learning and so on.  I'm not taking a stand, and I don't have the data to make an argument, but 1000 kids over 2 years is a lot less than killed by accidents, suicide, poisoning and other risks for this group.  I do know that one of the main factors motivating the recall of portions of the SF school board was refusal to re-open the public schools.

Rod, do you think those sort of "warning labels" can be applied in a politically unbiased way?   I do not.  Consider the warning labels you would apply versus the warning labels Richard would apply if you both worked at Facebook in the "warning label" department.   Human nature being what it is, I think it is impossible for warning labels or any other sort of advice to be doled out in an unbiased way.  Power corrupts and so on.  So I am opposed to warning labels being applied to political opinion.  I am fine with them on bottles of medicine of course!
