Hi

Somebody can tell me if Fujinon Binocular 16X70 are good
very good or excellent before I buy

Thank-you

Excellent. Period. If you want binoculars and don't care about the price range, GET 'EM. Me? I use binocs, but not enough, I reckon to justify the high-priced spread. I get by fine with Chinese 15x70s.

Disappointed with Canon Xsi so far

Posted By Rod Mollise

Michael McCulloch said:

I sold my Canon 10D some time ago in hopes of upgrading to a better DSLR for astrophotography. I was stoked about the Xsi which added things like Live View and complete remote control over USB -- including bulb exposures in excess of 30 seconds.

I know a lot of people want to eliminate the laptop, but, believe you me, you will be a lot happier if you ditch that remote, get a Shoestring DSUSB adapter and this:

I gave up looking through a viewfinder and fiddlin' with tiny camera controls the minute I gave up 35 bought a DSLR, and will never, ever go back.

Any problems dealing with Meade/Coronado?

Posted By Rod Mollise

Anyone else been having any problems or complaints with Meade's service on the Coronado PST or have any idea what's going on?

What's going on is that Meade is having CONSIDERABLE financial problems, and has recently moved its opertaion out of California and to Mexico (and China). Gear is being repaired, but it is taking time, and often "once" is not enough.

Meade Sky Insurance Great Buy or Nigerian Scam?

Meade Sky Insurance Great Buy or Nigerian Scam?
.
.... After waiting for 2 months with NO END in sight, just to get a box, so I can send my telescope to them, how can I recommend the added cost of sky insurance???
.... As in the Nigerian scam style, I keep expecting Meade to ask me for more money.

Is it a "scam"? No. Plenty of people have had this warranty honored. The problem is the current state of Meade. They are still embroiled in issues raised by the move of all production to Mexico (your scope will be trans-shipped from California to Mexico for repair, back to California, and back to you). The company is also currently dealing with severe financial problems (their stock value is at 39 cents a share last time I checked). About all I can advise is "hang in there" and bug them weekly.

Meade 26mm plossl

Posted By Rod Mollise

OK, now finally the question: Is the low eye relief a result of my C90, or am I to expect this same difficulty with the C8?

And now for some astronomical heresy, I am prepared to remove the lense elements from the 26mm plossl and chuck up the tube in the lathe and machine off the recessed portion of this eyepiece so that I can view with my eyeglasses on. I would appreciate any comments on this idea.

Surely I am not the only one to suffer such indignity at the hands of eyeglasses. Any help is greatly appreciated.

David B

It is the eyepiece, not the scope. Well, if machining off part of the barrel assembly works, that's fine (assuming you get the lenses back in their proper positions!)...but there is an easier way. Unless you suffer from astigmatism (severe), LET THE SCOPE BE YOUR EYEGLASSES. Most glasses wearers really don't need to wear them when they look through a scope; adjusting the focus should take care of most problems.

SkyScout vs. MySky

Posted By Rod Mollise

Gary Greenwald said:

I would like to buy my nephew and niece one of these for the holidays.

Any advice from users would be appreciated.

I Believe there were significant quality issues with the Meade (not a surprise), but I believe it is a much better design than the Celestron - and I think that Celestron may be redesigning the SkyScout and that is why they are down to $199.

Thanks

The MySky would have been nice if the po' folks at Meade had been able to work the bugs out. They couldn't or didn't try I am afraid. Many MySky users had extreme difficulty getting a GPS fix. Meade's solution for the forthcoming MySky Plus? Disable the GPS receiver (!)...

God, like Dark Matter, is difficult to prove or se

You know, it is very difficult to accept things by faith and belief alone.

Mark Twain once said: "Faith is believing what you KNOW ain't so."

No, science does NOT do this.

As for God? A SURE way to become disappointed is to look for her/him out in the larger universe. If you look for her/him in the gaps in scientific knowledge, you'll find those gaps slowly but surely closing, and the deity being squeezed out.

No, don't look for God Out There...look for her/him IN HERE...in the human heart. That is where God lives. God may not have OBJECTIVE reality, but she/he has PSYCHOLOGICAL REALITY and that is more than real enough.

Original C8 Optical Quality

Posted By Rod Mollise

Mike Gibson said:

Hi - figured I would ask you guys about an old C8 I "rescued" from an estate sale. It was in its original trunk and as new. Serial number 80312X. I didn't expect much compared to modern optics and coatings, but it was still spot on for collimation after at least 15 years in that trunk.

1) How old is this based on the S/N, stainless steel accessory mounting screws, no coatings indicated, and manual dec motion arm? (photo attached}

2) How good were the optics in these (typically)? I have to admit to being astounded at how good it is, compared to my C9.25, the only SCT I ever liked/kept long term (and still have). I mean c'mon...festoons on Jupiter without any adjustment after all these years?!

HI:

Serial numbers don't mean squat, unfortunately. Judging by what I see in the image, I'd say "late 70s - early 80s."

The optics were generally very good, with the main way they don't measure up to modern scopes being in the quality of the coatings. Not having to adjust things after many years is a sign the optics were collimated properly to begin with. I would expect your 9.25 to be noticeably better if it is properly collimated and cooled. ;-)

Unable to get shutter release

Posted By Rod Mollise

Michael Teuton said:

New to AP and digital cameras. Have been all over the Fujifilm Finepix S1 Pro manual and cannot find a solution.

I thought this might be a familiar problem to AP. I can focus and shoot with the proper lens on. I cannot get shutter release even if on manual with or without a mounting ring

I have it on manual, etc. I'm sure I'm just not reading and comprehending properly but maybe you guys know the problem and its unique to AP.

Thanks

Be sure the camera in in "M" mode.

ETX 125 PE alignment

Posted By Rod Mollise

Hoyoung Kang said:

I was trying to align ETX125PE.
I did as indicated in the manual.
Put scope in home position - counter clockwise fully and point zenith. then Followed alignment procedure as indicated.

When I tried go to, my scope position object slight left(right in the view field). Then I tried to move to the center of field.
But my scope send it back to the original position.
it is keep trying to return.

What is wrong with my system? or my procedure.

First of all, you don't need to point the tube at the zenith. All that is important is that you rotate counterclockwise to the hard stop.

Your problem, however, is that you have not done Drive Training. Be sure to do both altitude and azimuth. You will find instructions in the manual.
