Just take the scope up there and let the kids enjoy it. I doubt they'll try to covert you...LOL...and even if they do, you can always say "no."

EQ6 Synscan Pro vs CG-5-GotoNova Kit

Posted By Rod Mollise

Magnus Ahrling said:

What should I buy, a new EQ6 SynScan Pro mount or a GotoNova Kit for my CG-5? The price for buying the EQ6 S.Scan Pro will be about 3X as expensive as only buying the GotoNova for my CG-5.
The scopes I intend to use on any of the mounts are: Orion Optics Newtonian UK 8" f/6 (7,2kg), Intes MK66 (7kg) and maybe sometimes C80ED and ST120.

Any advice would be most helpfull.
I am just a visual observer, I don`t do any astroimagening! But I really would like a good GoTo mount wink

-Magnus

If you intend to use an 8-inch Newtonian on the mount, you will be much happier with the EQ-6.

new c6 vs older c8

would you say a new c6 with starbright xlt coatings is the equivlent of an older c8 with starbright coatings or would the older c8 still come out on top.

Sorry...the C8 will still blow its doors off. An XLT C8 presents a _slightly_ (but noticeably) brighter image than a Starbright C8, but the difference is subtle.

Ethos 17mm $750.00 ! ! !

Well there goes the rest of my 401K that I didn't loose in the market. At least you don't need the $25.00 2" extender.

Look on the bright side...the Ethos will likely hold its value better than your 401K investments. LOL.

LX 200 Classic conversion

Posted By Rod Mollise

Victor Cox said:

I asked the Meade rep, who had no idea, about converting the Classic basic circuit board in the telescope and matching hand controller to a later version. Has this been done short of just buying a new telescope. Looks like you could just buy a newer version circuit board for the telescope and match it with a new hand controller, maybe autostar or something.

This would be a very difficult, challenging task, and would require ALL circuit boards be replaced for starters. More practical:

1. Find someone who has removed their 12-inch LX200GPS from the forks and who would like to sell the fork.

2. Put the OTA on a modern GEM (CGE/G11 and UP recommended).

celestron c5

David Bacheller said:

I obtained a used celestron c5. It has a loose corrector plate. Is there a given protocol for correctly centering the plate (say, some home-built spacers at the perimeter) or must this be sent to celestron. Is believe I read about this being a somewhat common problem with a certain generation of c5's.

Also, the focus knob on this C5 moves VERY freely. It moves the mirror and focusing works fine, but I was surprised at the ease of movement. Is this normal?

Thanks for any insights,

David B

HI:

Older Celestrons had considerably easier focus action than the old ones. The way to center a corrector is via little paper shims. Were there none in place?

SCT corrector plate coatings question

Posted By Rod Mollise

Gary Pakalski said:

Hi everyone,
I've recently picked up an old 10" LX6 that the coatings on the corrector plate are about half gone. My first project is to try and remove the remainder of what's left and then try and find someone to re coat it.

So first off, anyone know how to remove the old stuff, and second does anyone know of a company that re coats correctors?

Thanks,
Gary

Give the corrector a real good cleanin' before you decide the coatings are gone. Often what appears to be damaged coatings is oil/film on the corrector. Corrector coatings--lens coatings--are very tough, and are not easy at all to remove if applied properly in the first place. Try a little Windex and Kleenex on that puppy. If they really are gone? Leave the corrector alone. Partial coatings will not hurt anythin'...
