OIII not as much fun

Posted By Charles Hakes

OK, I hit post instead of choose file... It's still early.

Not much processing here. Just align and add. I fiddled with contrast and brightness.

Holmes from Ohio on Monday

That looks as good as the rest of them. I am still waiting for the movie to come out.

M42 luminosity

Here is the H-alpha from a few mornings ago. Ten minutes total in 15 sec subs. I do have some more I can try to add in... That will be for another day.

M42 luminosity

I think I like the SII better than the Ha picture. This was taken on two different mornings as 30 second and 1 minute exposures for a total of 30 minutes. My first preference is to add everything together, but those central stars start to merge, so I "medianed" three 10 minute sets. I have looked at Astroart and Registax as far as image combining options, but this was done in CCDSoft.

For this B&W display I did a "midrange brighten" and then "adjust brightness and contrast".

I would be curious as to comments on better/worse programs to get more useful mixes. My attempts at just median combining give most of the levels "too low" to have enough gray scale variability, and some of the straight adds end up "too high" and start expanding the bright stars more than I want.

NGC 2403 - Close in

Great shot. I like the evolution record. I have mixed feelings about looking at some of my own earlier shots and processing - even from not that long ago.

M1 last night

By some strange quirk of the universe, this earlier image also has 29 minutes total time. But this time LRGB was 8:7:7:7.

I just ordered the DSI Pro III

Outback Cooler? Do you mean that cooling pattern on the back of the DSI models are just decorations? I haven't looked at the literature, but surely your pictures must have been cooled somewhat, since they are "cool." Does the DSI III report temperature? And how much more do you get with the "Outback"? (Now I will be thinking of bloomin' onions all day...)

Using a $6 lamp timer as a camera mount/drive

Posted By Charles Hakes

I like that. I guess you don't have a shot of your camera all mounted up... How heavy is it?

A few years back I built a hand cranked "barn door" mount and did a bit of experimenting with film. I usually pushed to 1600 and found that with a "standard" or wider lens that I only needed to turn about every 15 seconds.

IR imageing

That is really cool. Those are all great places to visit if you get the chance. They must have had lots of that spare time.

Ok, one more please! :^)

Wow, that looks great. When you get the process down are you going to share details?

One thing with the "before" image, and this may be my monitor, is it looks darker around the edge, like the flat wasn't enough, or something like that. I didn't see that on the "after" image. Any difference there?

Keep the images coming.
