First shots with AO-7

I'd say those stars are the definition of "round." Looks like it's a winner.

Floyd,
That's great that you're going ten minutes with nice round stars. These look good to me. But I was wondering which scope you shot this one with; if you're using a long focal length you will definitely not get the same stars you would with the same camera on something shorter. I know I cannot get the same tight stars with my SCT as I can on my 66mm refractor. It's really a matter of what you want to achieve on a given subject. If you want some tightening up of your stars, you could try a deconvolution filter or try the "rescale-before-stacking" technique Richard recently introduced to this forum.
But, once again, great job getting your rig up to speed! You images are looking terrific..

Why is it SO HARD!

Posted By Larry Durst

Joe,
My advice would be don't start with PhotoShop, but any one of the dedicated astronomy applications. Some have already been mentioned, plus, at varying costs there's also Nebulosity (inexpensive), AstroArt (Medium priced), Maxim (Expensive), PixInsight (Free for now in time-limited form), AIP4WIN (moderate, with an excellent reference book on processing as well) well, the list goes on and on. Most also have varying forms of demos so you can check them out without risk.
I think these will help you get down the fundamentals of processing with greater ease. I found AstroArt the easiest program to start on, but I also found the AIP4Win book indispensible for understanding the concepts behind the processing steps.
Hope this helps,
Larry

No better time than with that big Harvest moon hanging low in the sky! Have fun with it.
