What about Santa???

Posted By Paul Kammueller

Now for the real serious problem -- global warming is now within striking distance of endangering one of our favorite figures of childhood folklore. If the polar ice cap is gone in the next 5 to 10 years, what are we gonna tell the kids??? Santa lives in Greenland now? Or maybe he's moved to the South Pole?

White House plugs ears, sings I can't hear you la

Posted By Paul Kammueller

OK so the EPA concluded that greenhouse gases that must be controlled and sent a study to the White House which responded by refusing to open the email containing it.

This is how 5-year-olds deal with things they don't want to hear. Plug your ears and say "I can't hear you, la la la la la la". :C Are there any grown-ups in this administration at all?

Incidentally, the study included a finding that regulating emissions could realize $500 billion to $2 trillion in economic benefits over 32 years. grin So much for the alarmism claiming that anti-pollution measures will destroy the global economy. I can see why they wouldn't want that little tidbit of info getting out. wink

Saving Gas?

Posted By Paul Kammueller

OK I was wondering what others around here might have been doing to save gas since it's been $3-$4. I installed a mileage computer on my car which enabled me to fine tune my driving habits to the point where I was averaging 33-35mpg in mixed city/highway driving on a car that was rated 23mpg city, 32mpg highway under the old EPA measurement standards (21/29 on the new method). Now I've made the issue moot by switching to a job closer to home that requires less travel.

Anyone else doing such things? Anyone get a different car? Hypermiling? Biking or walking? Moving or changing jobs?

Indymac, Freddie Mac, and Fannie Mae

Posted By Paul Kammueller

So at the end of the day Friday the feds stepped in and took over Indymac, icon of the Alt-A mortgage business. Mortgage mammoths Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were trading all over the place on Friday -- clearly these last two are in the 'too big to fail' category from the standpoint of government intervention (though the form of that intervention may be of no use to stockholders). Anyone care to speculate on:

1) form of intervention to occur, and
2) the overall effect on the bond and mortgage markets, and the economy at large?

Buy tech??

Posted By Paul Kammueller

Couldn't help noticing the Nasdaq composite is at the long-term oversold end of its 30-year channel on the log chart (again), while it's holding up better than financials. I also notice that NOBODY talks about tech stocks anymore which may be useful from a contrarian standpoint. However it is a little disquieting that it reached this oversold extrema after just a few months where previous bottoms had decades separating them. Any takers?

Re: Good for Walmart

Posted By Paul Kammueller

Guess I'm not going to Walmart anymore. grin Well, okay, I'll be honest, I don't go there anyway, so there's no love lost there. But I'd have to be ridiculously desperate to go there now. They're sending a clearly hostile political message, I can only guess they would just as soon have half of their customers take their shopping elsewhere.

How 'long' is 'long term'

Posted By Paul Kammueller

I was doing some fun little research on markets & the CPI. Right now, adjusted for inflation, the DJIA, S&P500, and Nasdaq composite are all roughly where they were 10 to 11 years ago. You would have done much better with treasuries over the last decade, even with yields as crummy as they've been.

Commentators always say that stocks are investing for the long term, though they seldom mention how 'long' that actually means. A lot of people assume that's like 5 years or so. I think 'long term' pretty much needs to be 20 years or more.

Re: Obama caught AGAIN

Posted By Paul Kammueller

rotfl. Quotes about Paris Hilton from 3 years ago. This really is the best you guys can do, isn't it. So relevant to the issues facing the nation today. grin grin grin

All the hand-wringing about how much coverage Obama gets seems a bit disingenuous -- I mean, from what I've seen, virtually all the coverage he gets is either (1) whatever McCain is saying about him, or (2) coverage about how much coverage he's getting. Neither of which is in any way positive for his campaign of course. I can't wait for the debates.

Re: Did Edward's lie cost Hillary the nomination?

Posted By Paul Kammueller

I think Obama would just have gotten the nomination sooner to be honest. For the first leg of the primaries, Edwards and Obama were effectively splitting the "non-Hillary" vote.

Re: JSND versus Youth

Posted By Paul Kammueller

You can always hope. wink I expect FOX News to give the JSNDs lots of coverage, and right-wing bloggers to try to drum up lots of support for this "grass roots" (yeah right hahaha) movement. I mean, really the R's best hope is for the D's to willingly fall on their swords before the election. This is the fantasy they're clinging to, because, let's face it, this is all they've got.
