Plural of Ethos: Ethosi?

Doug Peterson said:

I only have one, but when I get more, what will I call them in the plural?

"Ethoi" sounds a little precious to me.

How about just "Ethoses"?!

LOL

I wasn't going to buy one soon but looking for first impressions of the electronic ease-of-use.

Well, yeah...what I was trying to say in my not-so-serious way is that nobody other than folks at Meade and (and perhaps their beta testers) knows that yet. It has not been released.

CGEM Computerized Mount : Looking for User Experie

Posted By Rod Mollise

Marc Whitsett said:

This looks like the beast I want...any one had a look at this item yet, the CGEM Computerized Mount? Am contemplating with the C9.25 OTA for visual and possibly imaging purposes. Thoughts appreciated.

This mount should be sufficient for the 9.25. I say "should be" because this is a new piece of gear. The similar Atlas is being used quite successfully for imaging with mounts in this size/weight range.

Laptops at Dark Sites?

Posted By Rod Mollise

Jared Wellman said:

Hey All,
I'm just getting into imaging and I'm planning on hitting a dark site this weekend that is sponsored by a local club here (which I am not a member of...yet)

I'm trying to figure out what is the protocol for using a laptop while out at a dark site. Obviously the screen is a light source and a somewhat powerful one at that. I plan on dimming the screen prior to even going out there but it's still a significant source of white light. Should I just leave the laptop in the car and not bother with it? Or is this kind of thing pretty normal?

I've looked over the club rules as well as the dark site's protocol but it says nothing about laptops...just that white light should be kept to an absolute minimum.

Thanks,
Jared

Keep it dim, red and shielded from the view of the folks around you. How do you do that? By doing all of the below.

1. If the program you are using has a night vision mode, turn that on.

2. Whether it does or not, cover the display with a piece of Rubylith or a Sight-saver.

3. Reduce the brightness of the display until it is no brighter than absolutely necessary.

4. make a little three-sided enclosure. I used the vinyl sign material politicians use for yard signs (available online).

How cold is too cold?

Posted By Rod Mollise

Michael Greenham said:

It's clear, the sky is dark, and it's -28C/-18.4F right now. I want to go outside but I am nervous about my gear in these low temps. Should I be?

How cold is too cold? Most gear will go way below what I can tolerate...Mid 30s F...LOL.

The main problem, seriously, is usually computer displays (like on an HC). Too cold and they become sluggish and unresponsive. They can be heated using hand-warmer packs, etc. For a simple non-electronic scope, it's gonna have to get much colder before you need to worry. In some cases, lubricants gettin' cold can make the focuser stiff. Same for the mount. But usually not in a disastrous fashion.

A couple of winters back I did some observing from Bath, Maine. My little WO Patriot 66 was quite happy.

I wasn't. LOL

A good price?

Damon Keener said:

Hello all,
I have a question for you guys. I am considering buying a Celestron Nexstar 8 (about a 2005 model, silver tube) with tripod, AC adapter, car adapter, 15mm, 7.5, 32mm, UHC filter, hard case and Star diagonal.
Now, is $900.00 a good price for all this?
I appreciate any help in advance.
Thanks.
Damon

Too high IMHO. The current SE has had significant improvements. Hard case or no, I'd use the money for a newun. If you can get him down to 600 or maybe 700 tops, "maybe." I really do perfer the current NS Se, though.

What Are Your Favorite Military Surplus Rifles?

What are your favorite military surplus rifles?

I'm going with pretty standard picks: the M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, M1903 Springfield, M96 Mauser, and WW II Lee-Enfield Rifle. Of course, the Swedish Mauser is the only one defending my neutrality... 8)

What?! No SKS? A hell of a better weapon than most folks give it credit for bein'...

Even moreso there's the AK, the king of assault rifles. Never been a better one, never will be I don't think.

C6-SCT Mounting Question. Would a CG-4 Cut it?

Posted By Rod Mollise

Victor Amadio said:

Looking to mount the OTA on a CG-4 or CG-5 (non Go-To). Looking for a mounting solution that will keep my budget in line. I would like to move up into a go-to system later as funds permit (1-2 years).

The question is regarding mounting the C6 SCT on the CG-4. I have been told the CG-4 is a little to light of a mount and should consider the manual control CG-5 second hand. I have no experience with this OTA or mount. I am moving over from a ETX125 where there was nothing to change in the mount setup.

I have been told the CG-4 may be to little mount for higher magnifications and any type of imaging and deep space observing.

Any comments or feedback or personal experience with the C6 on a CG-4. I am assuming there is no question about the CG-5 being optimal?

Thanks

IMHO, more than sufficient for visual use. That short SCT tube helps--a LOT.

Thanks

It will. But you'll have to pay for it.

Some free and good ones:

Hallo Northern Sky
Cartes du Ciel

Stellarium is good too, but unless things have changed, it is not easy to add new comets.
