'Meade DSI Pro With LRGB?

Posted By Larry Durst

Chris,
I'd say get one. It's great that you can now get your feet wet in this hobby for a very minimal investment. The big difference, as far as I know (probably not much!) is that you'll have a smaller image with the DSI Pro versus Pro II. Great thing is, if you like the hobby and want to invest more (and more and more and more...) the DSI Pro makes an excellent guider.
Have fun,
Larry

How about some Ms. Pacman

That's very cool. Need to get some more filters, I guess!

A different view of NGC281

Just looked at my work monitor and saw it as pretty dark. I did a quick tweak on curves:

Joe,
Wow! That is gonna' be a killer combination. Amazing detail with that very, very, very wide field. Can't wait to see more.

good book or starter for CCD Imaging

Posted By Larry Durst

Chris,
Stu's suggestions are dead on, and I'd add one more to you list: The Handbook of Astronomical Image Processing by Richard Berry and James Burnell. While Wadoski's book is very much a how to manual for all-things imaging--what scopes, mounts, how to shoot, process, etc.--this one focuses almost entirely on processing images, a very large part of the picture (pun just slipped out!). I found it very, very helpful to understand what the software actually did to an image to help me get a grip on the many options in the process. (BTW, also comes with its own processing software.)
Anyway, my 2c.
I hope you have fun with it,
Larry

Jim,
Just terrific. And I do love those old and new comparisons.

You've captured that beautifully, Joe. And only four minutes! I think it's one to add to my future target list.

Overdone, but it is my first attempt

Posted By Larry Durst

Kerry,
That's an amazingly good first shot. Wow! Now you just have to watch out for the addiction to set in. I also don't think it's overdone at all; in fact it might even be underdone. I'll bet there's more data lurking in the spiral that some carefull tweaking with a curves application would bring out without blowing out the core. Do you have software that can do curves?

You should provide a warning with that shot, Greg: please put on your sunglasses before opening 8) Absolutely amazing. Great resolution right down to the core. Sure would love to capture a glob that well some day.
