Are you kidding me? In Alaska? In one of the reddest states in the nation? Maybe covid?...
Good for her! She is a compelling candidate. https://www.adn.com/politics/2022/08/31/democrat-mary-peltola-wins-special-us-house-election-will-be-first-alaska-native-elected-to-congress/

Still, Palin and her Republican opponent garnered 60% of the vote. Apparently, a lot of the folks who voted for Palin’s opponent listed the Democrat Peltola as their second choice. Interesting. I wonder if this is a repudiation of Trump and his sycophants (hopefully), A repudiation of Sarah Palin, or just the growing pains of an electorate trying to understand their first go with ranked choice voting? I think we find out in November don’t we? I believe Alaska will revote on the seat then, although I might be wrong.  J

One republican (Tom Cotton R-Ak) has already posted on Twitter that "Ranked-choice voting is a scam to rig elections" and "a convoluted process and ballot exhaustion—which disenfranchises voters".

Australia has been using preferential voting (What aussies call ranked choice) for over 100 years and it has never been a problem and it has never been claimed that it disenfranchises voters. Actually it serves to support 3rd-party candidates and avoids people wasting their vote by voting for someone who has no chance of winning.

Cheers

Maurice
I have never had the opportunity to do ranked choice voting.  The concept does not seem to favor one party or the other though, so I have no idea what Cotton's problem would be, other than a desire to cry "rigged" whenever a Trump endorsed candidate loses.  Pathetic and extremely harmful to the country.  Jim

Richard:

The question was whether Trump lied.  Your reply is bolded above.  I wonder if you have thought this through.  Trump lied about the election being stolen.  This was a classic and pervasive lie, known to be false in the countless instances after election night when Trump or people under his direction outright stated that the steal was real.  When pushed, Trump and his people offered no proof in countless court cases of any effort to rig any aspect of the election.  Furthermore, Trump offered no proof that any minor instances of actual voter fraud affected the outcome in any state.

I don't (yet) buy into the theory that Trump "masterminded" the Jan 6 riots.  But it is obvious and basically indisputable from the slogans and signs that the rampaging mob was motivated by Trump's big lie of a stolen election.   The big lie also has caused Trump's posse of millions to basically believe that elections in the US were as untrustworthy as any election of a tin-pot dictator in a third world nation.  If Trump's fans were already inclined to distrust US institutions like our elections, the big lie hardened them in their positions.

The big lie, it's pervasive acceptance by many, and the riots motivated by the big lie have a specific effect:  This lie and the resulting mayhem have driven a huge expansion wedge into the already broad and hostile gap between the left and the right.  I know damn well that the left is a fault for the gap too, so no need to go there.  Still, we on the right must accept that Trump's big lie of a stolen election has broadened the gap raging in our nation.  I personally think that this gap and all of the discord between the left and the right is extremely detrimental to every man woman and child in the US.  The gap is possibly an existential threat to our National well being.  The gap effects every policy of governance, which effects the entirety of the economy, defense, foreign relations, education, the environment, and so on.

Everything.

Yet you say that Trump's lies don't affect your life one iota?  Care to reconsider?  Jim

Hi Greg:

I did not watch the speech.  Rather, I watched Purdue lose at the last minute (literally the last 51 seconds) to Penn State.  angry

Your list is interesting.  Although I did not watch, the list looks a lot like Biden made a desperate political ploy, designed to deflect attention from the issues that hurt Biden to his "strengths."  Who would expect anything different?  Politics in an election year.   Jim

Good luck to you Democrats who put this maniac in the Oval Office.

You can have him, and shove that piece of garbage as far up your backside as his aviator glasses wearing fat head will go.
Biden's speech and his previous "semi-fascist" rhetoric bothers me a lot because he slanders 1/2 the electorate and thus further divides this fractured nation.  I think this is a horrible tactic, especially by a man who ran as a cross-aisle uniter.

Here is the weird part.  Biden would not lean into this us-against-them polarizing rhetoric if his handlers did not think it would get more Ds elected.  Rich, you personally absolutely thrive in a climate of extreme polarization.  For you there are always good and intelligent guys (you, Darrian, and Greg).  Bad morons (Brian, James, and Rod) with very few exceptions.  (Russ?).  Anyway, you love the polarization.  Biden too is exploiting and exacerbating the polarization.  Polarization courses like life itself through Trump's very veins.

I challenged you yesterday concerning Trump's big lie that indisputably exacerbated our current level of polarization.  You never answered.

Serious question for anyone - I think political polarization is an huge threat to the fabric of this nation.  Does anyone agree with me, or is the entire political class and their constituents so invested in enhanced polarization to their world views and to drive votes, that any political discussion of cooperation and accommodation is merely insincere lip service?

I feel like a living anachronism.

Hi James, you and Rod have both made this point, so it is a valid point in my view.

Still, I drive past ranchers in rural Colorado every day who fly MAGA and "Let's Go Brandon" flags.  These folks, like Greg and Rich, would happily vote for Trump again if he is the nominee.  They, like Greg and Rich were not inside the capital on Jan 6.  These folks have no interest in overthrowing democracy, even if they are partial to some of Trump's BS.  These guys and women in rural CO are good people, pillars of the community in Chaffee County, living side-by-side with hippies and raft guides.

Biden is targeting them, even if he is not targeting anti-Trump Rs like me and Russ.  There are millions of them who are being targeted.  That is not good, and is a huge disappointment to me as a Biden voter in '20.  Jim

If you had bothered to listen to his speech, you would heard him specifically state he wanted to make clear he was not referring to the majority to Republicans or even half or so of 'em but to those who embrace the extremism of Trump, ie the election deniers and the perps of Jan 6th, for example.
Did you watch the Purdue v. Penn State game?  Seven lead changes.  Better use of my time than any political speech since maybe the Gettysburg Address.
