cg-5 sirius or lxd 75

Posted By Rod Mollise

Is it better? Yes.

I rank 'em thusly:

Sirius
CG5
LXD 75

I will say that the CG5 has the best HC firmware of the bunch.

Warning on getting parts for a used Orion Telescop

Posted By Rod Mollise

Julie Kaufman said:

I purchased a used Orion telescope and contacted Orion about ordering a replacement rubber foot for a Skyview Pro mount. I did not buy the Telescope from Orion but from a individual. I received the following reply from Orion. I am posting this to warn others.

The replacement parts that we keep in stock are typically used for warranty repairs and not for sale separately. If we had the part on the shelf and the customer purchased from us directly or through one of our authorized dealers and the product was out-of-warranty, then we would come up with a nominal price and sell it to them. Given the number of skus that we have and the number of parts that make up those skus, we can’t afford to maintain large quantities of all parts. Hence, the restrictive nature of the program and the reason we exclude products sold in the secondary market. I know this was not what you wanted to hear, but I thought I would try and explain why the folks you talked to previously had not been able to fulfill your request. :C

Was this an Orion mount? If it were a SkyWatcher or other variant, I could see them not wanting to support it. If it's an Orion they ought to. A RUBBER FOOTSIE, for god's sake. This goober could just have thrown one in an envelope and shipped it to you no charge. That's what I would have done, dammit.

Inhofe? Yeah, that's who _I_ trust on scientific matters. Didn't I read something by him in the APJ recently? LOL

Ethos vs. Nagler

Posted By Rod Mollise

Larry Seguin said:

Has anyone had an opportunity to compare the 13 mm Ethos to the 17 mm Nagler? I'm thinking of trading my 17 for the Ethos, to be used in a 14" f/4.7 reflector, and an 8" f/6 reflector. The Ethos will be a sweet spot for both scopes and the field of view will be the same. Specifically, I'd like to know if the Ethos will be as sharp as the 17, and if there are any eye relief issues, as well as anything else you may have noticed! Thanks in advance for any insights you can offer!
Larry

NO...but I have compared the Ethos 13 to the T6 13. Verdict? It was like going back to Plossls after Naglers first came out. No foolin'...

The E was dead sharp, sharper than the T6, I thought, the contrast was superior...and all that extra field? Huzzah!

LOL

The Peanut Butter Recall

Lee Spain said:

I'm appalled at the whole Peanut Butter recall situation. I think the management of Peanut Corporation of America should be prosecuted as murderers and the workers at the plant should be prosecuted as accessories. If you work in a food processing facility and you see mildew, water dripping into food through a leaky roof, roaches near food handling areas, and know that your employer is shopping for a good lab result so that they can ship product containing salmonella, I'm sorry, but you have an obligation as a citizen to step forward and report the problems to authorities. Now, I'm wondering if every little whole in the wall food processing facility is just as bad.

I understand they may very well be facing criminal charges.

Well, if nothin' else it shows why little ever gets done, or at least little ever gets done right. "Party before Country" being the watchword of _all_ the Washington Goobers.

Re: Celestron Hand Controllers

Jon: Thanks for the reply. Checked the site you recommended, and although it's chock full of info, it did not seem to have a direct answer to my Q. Here's what I'm saying. I have four Celestron Nexstar Controllers. One from a Nexwstar 4GT - probably the original version with some known and relatively minor software glitches, one from an older Celestron Nexstar 8, One sold to me as coming from a new CGE, and one sold to me as a ver. 3.13.13.10 - a fairly recent upgrade. Now lets pretend I put them all in a box and the labels fall off. How in the world do I figure out which is which? Thanks again. Mike.

Answer? You can't. The "little scope" HCs, the original NS5/8 HCs, and the latest programmable HCs look pretty much indistinguisable. You have to be able to fire one up and check the firmware builds.

Your "top 20" list (for 32° N)...

Posted By Rod Mollise

Tom Lacovik said:

Hi. I live at 45N but will have 2 weeks at a 32°N dark sky site (morocco) during a trip from Feb 14 to Feb 28. I have a 4.5" altaz mounted newt and a planetarium program on my iphone.

I'm looking to make a list of BOTH 'can't miss objects' at any Northern latitude - to show to the people i'm travelling with (so faint super fuzzies in a 4.5" need not apply), as well as some possibly not 'show stoppers' but things that i don't have access to at my normal 45° latitude that i can hunt down on my own after they've gone to bed.

What are your top 10 or top 20 things to see at that time (feb 20ish) and place 32N°?

Thanks!

Numero Uno is Omega Centauri, which is well worth waiting up until the wee hours for. And don't forget to look for Canopus. It's cool to be able to see both the brightest and second brightest stars in the sky at the same time.
