I then proceed to use the search function specific to the forum and find more than 20 past threads on UFOs! So I send that info to the "moderator" and ask him why those were not deleted. Crickets. (The dummy could have simply moved the thread to the off topic forum if he didn't think they were applicable in science and space exploration instead of deleting the entire thread but he couldn't even think to do that.
2. I posted the same light pollution petition on the CN light pollution forum that I had posted here and of which bore fruit in helping to reduce light pollution. A CN "moderator" deletes the thread and says we can't have any petitions posted as it can get too political. I then send him the following quote of the sentence appearing adjacent to the forum header: "While CN does not typically allow politics, this is one forum in which the discussion of legislation dealing with this matter is permitted."
Crickets...
Which is the primary reason we implemented the "moderator discussions" prior to taking any actions where feasable......far to easy to let personal biases or ignorance into the decision process. Each forum usually has from 3 to 5 mods assigned to it. Policy is generally "reach a consensus before taking action" which goes a long way to eliminating the issues you mentioned.
There is also a learning curve involved with new mods as well that proves to be a factor while they learn the ropes.
